Jessica Hopper is a music and culture critic whose work regularly appears in GQ, Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, and the Chicago Tribune. This book is not only ridiculously great, it is an Important

This book is not only ridiculously great, it is an Important, Essential Book for a number of reasons too lengthy to get into in the space of an Amazon review. Incomparable and peerless (although she is a champion of all of her peers, as well as a longtime mentor for scores of writers), Hopper not only gets to the heart of the matter in this collection (whatever that matter may be) right off the bat, she expertly asks the hard questions of the music she's writing about, the fans who love that music, and herself as a life-long music fan and critic. Hopper masters what few critics can do (and what even fewer can do well): digging deep into the anatomy of the magnetic bond (or lack thereof) between music and listener, critically investigating music cultures, and critically investigating her own relationship with it all simultaneously. She takes no prisoners; her voice is singular and essential. Buy this book for yourself, and for anyone you know who loves music. You will laugh, you will cry. Promise.

Criticism so sharp, this book reads like a brace of daggers

Reading Hopper's essays and reviews and interviews, i found myself on a roller coaster ride, zooming from turns of phrase that made me laugh out loud to high-fivably incisive bits of analysis. I haven’t read an actual book-book that made me think and feel the way this one did since those RE/Search collections from the wayback machine: Angry Women and Incredibly Strange Music and such.

What is it like to read this book if you are someone who never paged through Factsheet Five in the cavedwelling days of the netless 90s, hoping to find somebody writing a zine about things you cared about? Because that’s what this book feels like: my favorite zine’s full print run, a best-of collection of music writing that exactly typifies what fans of rock music need to read from a writer with an encyclopedic knowledge of the oeuvre and an insightful feminist perspective. I’m not twenty years old, looking desperately for smart female voices that spark in the dark and illuminate things i’ve been suspecting about music and art and gender and politics, but if i were, I’d clutch this book close to my heart and thumb all the gold leaf off the edges of its pages by month’s end. As it is though, i speed-read it cover to cover, and sat down to make a list of the friends i plan to loan it to or buy it for.

Some of the pieces in here stand side by side with the literary rock writing of John Jeremiah Sullivan and Steve Almond. Hopper’s not punching above her weight here—she’s in the same class.

A Refreshing Perspective on my Beloved Rock Music

There are many things to love about this collection of essays. The writing is honest and often times witty. As a long-time lover of classic and alt-rock, I can identify so much with Ms. Hopper's conflicted stance on the whole subject. As a genre that has largely been male-dominated and is rife with misogyny, it is only natural for our female population to ask the questions, "Where do we fit?" and "Where is our voice?" Thankfully here is a book that at least furthers the dialogue.

As the German military grew in the late 1920s, it began looking for a better way to secure its communications. It found the answer in a new cryptographic machine called "Enigma." The Germans believed the encryption generated by the machine to be unbreakable. With a theoretical number of ciphering possibilities of 3 X 10114, their belief was not unjustified.1 However, they never reached that theoretical level of security. Nor did they count on the cryptanalytic abilities of their adversaries.

The Enigma machine based its cipher capabilities on a series of wired rotor wheels and a plugboard. Through a web of internal wiring, each of the 26 input contacts on the rotor were connected to a different output contact. The wiring connections of one rotor differed from the connections on any other rotor.

Additionally, each rotor had a moveable placement notch found on an outer ring. The notch forced the rotor to its left to step one place forward. This notch could be moved to a different point on the rotor by rotating the outer ring. The Germans followed a daily list, known as a key list, to indicate where the notch should be placed each day.

Another complication to the machine involved the plugboard, which the Germans called a "Stecker." The plugboard simply connected one letter to a different letter. That also meant that the second letter automatically connected back to the first. Again, the key list indicated which letters should be connected for that day.

Each day, the Germans followed the key list to plug the plugboard connections, select the rotors to be placed in the machine, change the rotor notch placement, and place the rotors in the left, center, or right position within the machine. Finally, the code clerk chose which three letters were to appear through three small windows next to the rotors. These letters indicated the initial rotor settings for any given message, and the code clerk changed those settings with every message he sent.

The path the electrical current took initiated with the keystroke. The current passed through the plugboard, changing its path if that letter was plugged to a different letter. From there it entered the first, or rightmost, rotor at the input contact. The rotor wiring redirected it to a different output that went directly into the next rotor’s input. After passing through, and changing directions in each rotor, the current entered a reflecting plate. This plate not only changed the "letter," but also sent the current back through the rotors, again resulting in three more changes. The current made one last pass through the stecker and finally on to the light panel where the cipher letter lit up.

To decipher an Enigma message, the recipient had to have an Enigma with the same plugboard connections, rotors, notch placement, left/center/right positions, and initial settings. This enabled the current to follow the same pathway in reverse and resulted in the plaintext letter lighting up on the light panel. The Germans, with their published key lists, had the necessary information.

The Allies did not. The Enigma eliminated whatever intricacies a language may possess that previous methods of cryptanalysis exploited. One such practice was frequency counts. Certain letters in any language are used more often than others. By counting which cipher letters appeared most often, cryptanalysts could make an assumption about which plaintext letter they represented. Machine encryption like the Enigma destroyed the frequency counts. Cipher letters tended to appear equally often.

I edited this book, so I'm not the most objective, but FYI, this is a very large book (984 oversize pages) with over 1,000 photos. It is written as a practitioner's manual, so there are many tables and bullets to find content quickly. Best, Rani

Best book on the topic

This is quite a remarkable book about designing products and environments for children aged 3 to mid-teens. The scope covers topics from physiology on through a broad range of topics including children and injuries, warnings for children of different ages, the design of schools, playgrounds, farms and even cities and communities. I was astonished at the high caliber content, which was written for the layman as well as the practitioner but lists the information in compact forms - much of the 1,000 pages is in tables, charts and graphics. Really nothing like it. JH.

In this series opener that marks Marvel comics legend Lee's debut for kids, 12 people-some heroes, some villains-receive superpowers based on the signs of the Chinese zodiac. The heroes, of course, are the youngest characters in the book. The descriptive prose is as spare and unambiguous as an old-fashioned interactive computer game-think "Zork," from the 1970s. "[The stairway] was made of wood, with a creaky old railing beside it. The walls were worn metal, stained and weathered by time." But the book contains enough fight scenes for several issues of a Marvel comic, and they're joyously inventive. People reveal their characters by the way they fight. A tiny girl with the ability to teleport wins fights by running away, over and over again, until the other person is exhausted; she's the Rabbit. These confrontations aren't described with the clarity Lee and Moore use to talk about the settings. Readers may have to look at a few passages twice to figure out just who hit whom. Fortunately, Tong loves drawing battle scenes. Pages and pages are crammed with energetic black-and-white drawings of people bounding around the room. But the characters are so engaging that the scenes where they're joking around and telling ridiculous stories are more entertaining than the battle sequences. The characters that are destined to use the powers are extremely stereotypical; however, instead of being offensive and off-putting, this heavy-handed typecasting comes across as familiar and comical. This is understandable, as the text reads like a verbal description of a detailed visual. This is the beginning of a Fantastic new series!

As Stan Lee himself said, this is a book for anyone who loves a great adventure. Friendship and teamwork are the crucial part of the book as well as believing in yourself. it doesn't matter if you are 5 or 92, this book has something for everyone. I highly recommend anyone to give this book a chance.

What is your zodiac sign? Would you be a rooster like Roxanne? A rabbit like Kim? A ram like Liam? A pig like Duane? Perhaps a dragon like Jasmine (or Maxwell)? Or maybe even a tiger like the hero, Steven Lee? Want to find out for yourself? Then this is the book for you. it's time to embark on an epic quest to save the world. This is a great book. I had trouble putting it down. It was never boring, easy to read, and understand. Which makes it great for all ages. I recommend it to everyone.
