GOOD BOOK with insights but not a very polished written book reflecting to its title
By kreuz
Long story short, I recommend this book, you will find a lot of useful information on directing cameras. But the techniques and rules mentioned are more on the surface and lack of depth in terms of building the design of camera movements upon your materials.

It all adds up
By Dave Watson, Editor, Movies Matter
Gil Bettman, a seasoned professional, has put together a book that is boundless, inspiring, and useful in all aspects of filmmaking. I read the foreword by Robert Zemeckis and took his word that if I opened this book to any page and find it useful. Strategies for action sequences, which lenses to employ where, and how to use different master shots all showed things I hadn't noticed. The author picks apart the subconscious level of viewing films and sequences we've recognized, and gives us a barrel-full of tools to use in the future, as a viewer and filmmaker. Working in film, things have to be aesthetically pleasing, and believable. Bettman knows how to shoot a scene so that characters, action, and characters add up to an experience we will use for years to come.

A must have for every filmmaker
By Jeff Phillips
As a successful writer and former editor, I felt confident in my decision to direct my first feature film, @urFRENZ. Fortunately, a friend handed me the book “First Time Director,” while I was in pre-production. By the time our shoot had wrapped, I had given a silent word of thanks almost daily to the book’s author, Gil Bettman. Now, Gil is back with “Directing the Camera,” a comprehensive text on the hows and whys of the moving camera and the rules of visual design. It’s difficult to accurately convey the process of working with the camera in print, but Gil’s cogent description is the next best thing to hands on experience. Just as important, he marries camera movement to the story, shot by shot. He understands the importance of internally and externally generated camera moves, and shows us why today, more than ever, new filmmakers need to know how it applies to their craft. From the dolly shot to the handheld, Gil takes the reader not only behind the camera, but on a deeper journey into the mind of a master director who understands how to visually capture the relationship between the story and the actor in any scene. He is equally adept at teaching how to shoot dialogue sequences with a moving camera, or shooting action. “Directing the Camera” belongs on the bookshelves of anyone serious about making movies.
