The Second Book of a Wonderful 4-Series Set
By A Customer
This is the second book a 4-series set about a high school in California that holds an annual Peach Blossom contest & ball. This particular year's theme is the 50's, so the winner is nicknamed Pretty Peggy Sue. At the end of the first book, we found out who won the contest and who died. (But I won't tell, I don't want to spoil the fun!) Most everyone is grieved and wants to find out who the murderer is. Efforts are made to find out.

Six Frigates: The Epic History of the Founding of the U.S. Navy, by Ian W. Toll

How "a handful of bastards and outlaws fighting under a piece of striped bunting" humbled the omnipotent British Navy.

Before the ink was dry on the U.S. Constitution, the establishment of a permanent military had become the most divisive issue facing the new government. Would a standing army be the thin end of dictatorship? Would a navy protect American commerce against the Mediterranean pirates, or drain the treasury and provoke hostilities with the great powers? The founders—particularly Jefferson, Madison, and Adams—debated these questions fiercely and switched sides more than once. How much of a navy would suffice? Britain alone had hundreds of powerful warships.

From the decision to build six heavy frigates, through the cliffhanger campaign against Tripoli, to the war that shook the world in 1812, Ian W. Toll tells this grand tale with the political insight of Founding Brothers and a narrative flair worthy of Patrick O'Brian. According to Henry Adams, the 1812 encounter between USS Constitution and HMS Guerriere "raised the United States in one half hour to the rank of a first class power in the world." 16 pages of illustrations; 8 pages of color.

  • Six Frigates The Epic History of the Founding of the U s navy

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Toll, a former financial analyst and political speechwriter, makes an auspicious debut with this rousing, exhaustively researched history of the founding of the U.S. Navy. The author chronicles the late 18th- and early 19th-century process of building a fleet that could project American power beyond her shores. The ragtag Continental Navy created during the Revolution was promptly dismantled after the war, and it wasn't until 1794—in the face of threats to U.S. shipping from England, France and the Barbary states of North Africa—that Congress authorized the construction of six frigates and laid the foundation for a permanent navy. A cabinet-level Department of the Navy followed in 1798. The fledgling navy quickly proved its worth in the Quasi War against France in the Caribbean, the Tripolitan War with Tripoli and the War of 1812 against the English. In holding its own against the British, the U.S. fleet broke the British navy's "sacred spell of invincibility," sparked a "new enthusiasm for naval power" in the U.S. and marked the maturation of the American navy. Toll provides perspective by seamlessly incorporating the era's political and diplomatic history into his superlative single-volume narrative—a must-read for fans of naval history and the early American Republic. From Booklist
Not confined to sea battles, Toll's history of the U.S. Navy's formative decades, from the mid-1790s to the War of 1812, rounds out affairs by anchoring the nascent navy to its financial supports. Navies are not inexpensive, and the costs of building and maintaining ships appear lightly but persistently in Toll's narrative. It centers on the first vessels purpose-built for the navy, the half-dozen frigates of which the USSConstitution moored in Boston today is the last survivor. Besides money, their construction involved politics; the Federalists favored the naval program (creating the Department of the Navy in 1798), while Jefferson's parsimonious Republicans were more diffident. Toll is as insightful about the essential domestic and diplomatic background as he is with his dramatizations of the naval engagements of the new navy, which produced a crop of national heroes such as Stephen Decatur. The maritime strategy and the highly developed sense of officers' honor, which influenced where particular battles occurred, emerge clearly in this fluent account. Vibrant and comprehensive, Toll makes an impressive debut. Gilbert Taylor

Excellent book to learn about the origins of The US Navy
By DeMille fan
Excellent book both from the writing style and content. Although most of us are familiar with the Revolutionary War few really understand where the phrase "from the shores of Tripoli" sung in the Marine Corps Hymn originated. Also, most people recognize that "Old Ironsides" describes our country's most famous ship The USS Constitution but exactly why was this ship so named? These are but of few of the tidbits contained in this documentary on the causes for America getting into the not so famous War of 1812 and why it was necessary for establishing a United States Navy built around six frigates. Also we learn why these frigates were able to take on and defeat in several sea battles what was considered the strongest navy in the world at the time - The Royal Navy. We learn also why American captains and crews were able to fight so effectively and bravely in these sea battles. We are also given the opportunity to learn in depth about our ships most famous and not so famous captains Another insight not often covered in typical US history courses is the political interactions between the Federalists and Republicans that had such an influence on what type of navy was first started and then what finally evolved toward the United States becoming a major sea power.with the famous "White Fleet" sent around the world by President Teddy Roosevelt.

... story of the founding of US Navy is a terrific read that entertains and educates
By Joe Capuano, Jr.
Ian Toll's telling the story of the founding of US Navy is a terrific read that entertains and educates. Toll takes us back to the early years of our nation and how Maritime trade and agrarian farming were our primary economic activities. Our President John Adams is faced with Barbary pirates capturing our merchant ships costing us tremendous economic losses. Congress authorizes our first 6 frigates to be built to defend our merchant vessels. The story takes us through the design, building and outfitting these first men of war. America's new Navy is able to defend our merchant ships and defeat the Barbary Pirates. Toll writes about our new Naval officers, their courage, struggles, sacrifices and victories along with loss and death. These 6 frigates go on to defend our country in the war of 1812 with England and set America's Navy's place in the world.

A History Brought to Life
By H. Smith
I highly recommend this book. It was well written and flowed. I especially enjoyed his description of the sea battles. Graphic at times with sufficient detail to bring them alive. Learning about the politics of the times made me realize the more thing change the more they stay the same. I look forward to getting back to Boston and visiting Old Ironsides now that I have in depth knowledge of its history and why it is so special in American history.

Whiskey and Charlie, by Annabel Smith

"A sharp, perceptive novel about family and forgiveness, Whiskey & Charlie will stay with me for a very long time." Christina Baker Kline, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Orphan Train

With the poignancy of Tell the Wolves I'm Home and the fraught tension of The Burgess Boys, Whiskey and Charlie is a captivating novel of brothers who have drifted apart-and the accident that will determine their future. Told as a seesaw of hope and fear, this novel explores the dark truths about what family really means to us.

Whiskey and Charlie might have come from the same family, but they'd tell you two completely different stories about growing up. Whiskey is everything Charlie is not ― bold, daring, carefree ― and Charlie blames his twin brother for always stealing the limelight, always getting everything, always pushing Charlie back. By the time the twins reach adulthood, they are barely even speaking to each other.

When they were just boys, the secret language they whispered back and forth over their crackly walkie-talkies connected them, in a way. The two-way alphabet (alpha, bravo, charlie, delta) became their code, their lifeline. But as the brothers grew up, they grew apart.

When Charlie hears that Whiskey has been in a terrible accident and has slipped into a coma, Charlie can't make sense of it. Who is he without Whiskey? As days and weeks slip by and the chances of Whiskey recovering grow ever more slim, Charlie is forced to consider that he may never get to say all the things he wants to say. A compelling and unforgettable novel about rivalry and redemption, Whiskey & Charlie is perfect for anyone whose family has ever been less than picture-perfect.

"A finely crafted novel that keeps us reading because we care about the characters. It's a terrific book."―Graeme Simsion, New York Times bestselling author of The Rosie Project and The Rosie Effect

Looking back, Charlie Ferns thinks it began when they were nine years old, the year his mother's sister Audrey moved to Australia. It was a Saturday morning, just like any other, when she came over to tell them. Charlie's father was playing squash; Whiskey, who was still William then, was upstairs. He was supposed to be practicing his trombone, but he was rebuilding his Scalextric track instead. Charlie knew this because he had gone upstairs to get his Star Wars figurines, and he had seen William kneeling on their bedroom floor with all the pieces of track out of the box, his trombone in the corner, still inside its case.

"Don't tell Mum," William said. Charlie shrugged. He knew his mother would work it out soon enough when she didn't hear William sliding up and down his scales. She was sharp like that. But on this particular day, his mother was distracted by what his aunt was saying.

Charlie wasn't listening at first. He was absorbed in orchestrating a furious light saber battle between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. It wasn't until he realized that his aunt was doing all the talking, that his mother wasn't saying anything at all, that Charlie began to take notice. You see, his mother usually kept up her part in a conversation. Vivacious, that's what people said about her, and although Charlie didn't know what this meant exactly, he knew it had something to do with her talking and laughing a lot. Her silence was a bad sign. It usually meant one of two things: one, Charlie or William or, worse still, both of them had gone too far, or two, she had a bone to pick with their father.

"Your mother's upset, boys," their dad would say when their mother went silent on him, and they would leave the room, knowing an almighty argument was on the horizon.

"The calm before the storm," their father had joked to them once about their mother's silences, and they had laughed, guiltily, not really understanding, but knowing their mother would not find this joke funny. Charlie had never known his mother to go silent on anyone else. He stayed where he was, crouched on the floor beside the armchair, but he stopped the battle between the forces of good and evil and began to listen.

"I want to leave England, start all over again," his aunt was saying. "I want to go somewhere where people don't know me as Bob's widow, where they don't feel sorry for me or give me the cold shoulder because they blame me for his death. I want to go somewhere where nobody will even know what happened unless I tell them myself."

Charlie realized that both his aunt and his mother had forgotten he was there. None of the grown-ups ever talked about Uncle Bob's death when Charlie and William were around. They wouldn't have known anything at all if William hadn't overheard his mother on the phone, talking to her best friend, Suzanne. Bob had committed suicide, their mother told Suzanne, because Audrey confronted him about the other woman.

"Which other woman?" William had asked, but their mother had glared at him with such intensity that he had let it drop.

When they had asked their father about it later, he had snorted.

"Other woman?" he said. "That's a laugh. Other women, more like it."

This comment had left the boys no closer to understanding why it had happened, but their father did at least explain that committing suicide meant that Uncle Bob had killed himself, and he even told them how, explaining about the rope and his neck breaking before their mother overheard the conversation and stopped him by saying, "Could you occasionally engage your brain before opening your mouth?"

Charlie stayed absolutely still, thinking he might at last be able to solve the riddle of his uncle's death, and he felt a thrill go through him that he would be the one who found it out. He couldn't wait to tell William.

"You can understand that, can't you, Elaine?"

Audrey waited for her sister to answer, and in the silence, Charlie realized that his mother was crying. They had one of those shiny tablecloths you didn't have to wash-you could wipe it with a sponge-and Charlie could see his mother's tears sliding off her chin and dripping onto it, plip, plip.

"I'm not even forty yet," his aunt said, "but I feel like here my life's already over."

This comment was so surprising that Charlie forgot about his mum crying, or finding out the secret about Uncle Bob's death. Of course Charlie knew that Audrey was his mother's older sister. He had never known how much older, but if he had to guess, he would have said twenty years at least. In fact, Audrey seemed so much older that Charlie tended to think of her as his mother's mother, rather than as her sister. This thought was partly left over from when he was younger and hadn't been able to understand why other people had two grandmothers and he had only one. For a while he had pretended Audrey was his grandmother and not his aunt. He knew better now, of course, knew perfectly well that his mother's mother was dead, that she had died when he was three weeks old, and that's why he couldn't remember her at all. But his idea that Audrey was older had gotten stuck in his mind.

Once, his mother had shown Charlie a photo from Audrey's wedding, and Charlie could not believe the woman in the white dress in the center could possibly be his aunt. For some time afterward, he had tried to look for that skinny, pretty girl inside his aunt's soft and shapeless face, but he had never seen it, and after a while, he had forgotten to look. But he had asked his mother once how Audrey got so old. His mother had sighed, one of those big, long sighs she always gave when she talked about her sister.

"She's had a very hard life, Charlie."

To Charlie, a hard life was being a beggar, like in Oliver Twist, or your whole family sleeping in one bed, like in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He did not understand how two people who lived in a big house with a golden retriever could have a hard life. Besides, he had heard his mother say lots of times how lucky Audrey was.

"You're too young to understand this now, Charlie, but it's been a great disappointment to Audrey, not being able to have children..." She trailed off. Charlie looked at her. She seemed to be looking at something in the mirror. "And then the cancer," she said, but she was not really talking to Charlie; she seemed to have forgotten he was there. "She was really very young to have a mastectomy," she added, to no one in particular.

Charlie put his Matchbox Ferrari on top of his mother's dressing table and made a revving sound. He didn't want to talk about that. His mother had explained it to him before they went to see Audrey in the hospital, and it gave him a tummyache to think about it.

"Why else?" he asked.

"Why else what?"

Charlie revved the car impatiently. "Why else is she so old?"

"Well, I don't know, Charlie, isn't that enough? But I don't suppose Bob's behavior has helped."

"Why?" Charlie asked. "What did Uncle Bob do?"

"Oh, Charlie, you wear me out with your questions," she said, suddenly coming to, and she started tidying the dressing table, which meant the conversation was over.

So Charlie had asked his dad, which was what he always did when his mother's explanations didn't satisfy him.

"Did Uncle Bob make Auntie Audrey old?" he asked.

"Who told you that?"

"Mum."

His dad looked like he was about to laugh. "I suppose you could explain it like that."

"But how did he?"

"How did he? I suppose by being unfaithful. I think that's what your mother means."

"What's ‘unfaithful'?"

"Well now, I suspect your mother might give me a thrashing if I told you that, boy. Nice try though, Charlie, nice try."

Unfaithful. It had sounded like something important, the way he had said it. Charlie had turned the word over in his mind. Faithful is what everyone always said about his granddad's dog, Tartan, because he always lay down at Granddad's feet and went everywhere with him, even sometimes on the tractor. But why would Audrey want Bob to lie down at her feet? Charlie hadn't been able to make sense of it, and William, who was smart with those sorts of things, hadn't been able to work it out either.

Thinking about it again, Charlie lost the thread of the conversation at the kitchen table. By the time he'd thought it all through, his mum had stopped crying.

"Australia! What an adventure, Audrey," she said as she put the teacups in the dishwasher. "I suppose we'll have to come out and see you there one day."

"Alpha and Omega," she said when she explained it to the boys. Sometimes their mother spoke like that-bits of other languages, odd lines from plays she had read. Their father said this was because she had a brain but she didn't really get to use it, that it just boggled away inside her head and sometimes funny things came out. She said to Charlie and William that Alpha meant the beginning and Omega was the end, and that for Audrey, moving to Australia was the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.

As well as being a new beginning for herself, in a way, Audrey's Omega was also Charlie's Alpha. Because before she left for Australia, she bought all of them lavish presents, the kinds of things they would never have bought for themselves. She took Elaine up to London to see Cats, a musical they both had on cassette tape and had wanted to see for years, and she bought their father a crystal brandy decanter.

But best of all, she bought Charlie and William the walkie-talkies, which were the beginning of everything.

Brothers Forever
By KasaC
Charlie always regarded his older (by minutes) brother William as being the Alpha sibling. Always the more daring, ostensibly more charismatic, more attention-garnering of the two, it is clear from the beginning that this rivalry is the impetus that has always driven William. The boys are given a set of walkie talkies, and use the International phonetic alphabet as their code. When he points out Charlie's name is already a part of this code, William accepts when Charlie starts calling him Whiskey, which becomes his given name. As adults, they have become estranged, yet Charlie goes to hospital when summoned to his brother's bedside where Whiskey lies in a coma, and much of the book is about him coming to terms with his complicated feelings about his brother. Much is revealed, and Charlie, while the central character, does not always act in a manner to receive sympathy. His perceived relationships with both his brother and his girlfriend are not as straightforward as usual in books of this kind, making it a more complex story and initially thought.

Complex and interesting characters, some fun plot twists, and a unique approach to presentation.
By Darin
As someone who has always wished I had a twin, I was intrigued when this title came up in an ad on my Kindle. I'm glad I acted on the impulse and bought this book, as it was well worth it. Although I could not relate (thankfully) to the situation in this book, I could relate to Charlie, one of the twins. With this instant connection, I was taken in immediately and wanted to cheer him on to the end, hoping he would learn and grow.

The story is told in a very creative way, using the phonetic alphabet as chapter titles. It takes us from the twins' childhood, through their youth, and into adulthood up to the point of one of the twins being in a coma. The twin not involved in the accident, Charlie, must come to grips with the relationship he has (or doesn't have) with his brother, Whiskey. We become involved in their lives as we visit different events in their past that explain what has led up to things being the way they are. There are several surprises along the way that complicate matters, which makes the book even more interesting.

In many areas of the book, the author starts speaking of event or a person as though they have been mentioned before. For example, the accident itself is referred to as an accident, but it's not until later in the book that we find out what kind of accident it was. I like this literary device - I soon discovered that unexplained things would be explained soon enough, and I looked forward to finding out the missing piece.

I recommend this book to anyone, especially to those looking to heal a rift between family or even friends. And even more to those who have had to deal with (or are dealing with) a loved one in a coma. However, even if you don't fall in one of these categories, you will still enjoy this read.

Whiskey and Charlie
By C. Masters
What a great book. Twin boys Whiskey and Charlie grew up together, fell apart and a significant event happened to Whiskey which brought them together again. They both were introduced to another, brother Mike! This was a great story of relationships and family!

Tower 13, by Nathan Ritzo

For Sergeant Mathew Duffy, U.S. Army, Camp Victory, Baghdad, Iraq in 2004 was a hot, hostile environment. A place where he experienced two distinct worlds of conflict. One, in which a determined enemy attacked on a daily basis. The other, where a battle of military careers and politics was being fought.
And yet in the midst of it all, he discovered moments of quiet, natural beauty, and even love. Most of the time, though, none of it made any sense at all.
Tower 13 is Sgt. Duffy’s story of life at Camp Victory during Operation Iraqi Freedom II, and his assignment to take to the guard tower with two other soldiers on the night of Saddam Hussein’s arraignment—July 1, 2004. Thanks to the media’s careless broadcasting of Saddam Hussein’s location, Sgt. Duffy and his team would face numerous dangers from within as well as without.
Based on the actual experiences of soldiers who were there, Tower 13 affords the reader an intimate, realistic account of a soldier’s day-to-day life at war.

A Surprisingly Good Read for a First Time Author
By TBC
This was a surprisingly good read. This was a great story without any political bias, except for the military politics that accompany active duty. The story focuses around a central character - Sergeant Matt Duffy - who follows his own path in life, without the need for a lot of external support and encouragement. He's also a reluctant hero, a royal pain-in-the-neck to his peers and superiors, as well as someone you'd want by your side in a wartime situation. As the story progresses, you develop a love-hate relationship for the guy - much like his active duty cohorts. When you go back and read the preamble and see the picture of the author, you want to ask him which events happened to him versus his peers. The story covers a 24-hour period that is filled with non-stop action in a place where you'd least expect it. I could definitely see this as a movie someday. Maybe the author will write a screenplay.

Spiritual Discourses is a “must read” and I recommend this EXCELLENT reading for Muslim and non-Muslim readers.
By Patricia Miller
Spiritual Discourses is definitely one of the most unique spiritual books I have ever read. The title of this book is so inspiring! The cover design is so elegant, so beautiful, and so eye-catching! I really liked the dedication section where the author wrote so appreciatively that, “My inspiring teacher behind this work was my father who constantly urged me to ponder and to draw upon my own understanding and insights from the Qur’an.” Obviously, it reveals his deep love as much as his deep appreciation and respect for his very first teacher, whom was his father.

I was very impressed with the organization of this gorgeous book. Each chapter is filled with all the glorious verses from the magnificent Qur’an, which provides deeper insight into lessons taught from this brilliant book. The collection of all the divine verses from the glorious Qu’ran engages the readers’ mind so delightfully which leads to new discoveries about themselves. In addition, these marvelous verses serve as guidelines for readers in understanding how to use all the suggested and beautiful guiding principles from the holy Qur’an and Prophet Mohammad’s (pbuh) sayings. As result, through the light of all the readings, I discovered the pure love and true beautify of Islam.

Furthermore, these amazing readings help the readers (Muslims and non-Muslims) to transform their lives in ways that make it easy for them to love their lives and their faith more than yesterday and today for a better tomorrow.

Unquestionably, I am sure, like me, all the readers will love, enjoy and adore this outstanding and BEAUTIFUL book! And it is a “must read” and I recommend this EXCELLENT reading for Muslim and non-Muslim readers.

It also serves as a motivational tool.

This book can be your reference for all things spiritual!
By Quaid Saifee
“And He gives wisdom to whoever He will. Whoever is given wisdom has truly been given much good, but only those with insight bear this in mind” (Quran 2:269)

Dr. Sherali has compacted lots of advice and guidance based on Quran and the life of prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in this beautifully written book. The author’s love for the Quran, the Prophet and the universal message of Islam is succinctly shines through in 235 pages & 33 short chapters.

Every chapter starts with a beautiful verse from the Quran and then reflects and expands on the comprehensive meaning of that verse. I would recommend the reader to pause and reflect before moving forward from a paragraph to the next while reading this book. If you want to benefit from this book, take your sweet time reading and reflecting.

Let me give you a brief on chapter 16 of the book to pique your interest. In this chapter, the author expounds on few basic principles of life that are strongly rooted in the precepts and teachings of Islam.
- If someone does good to you, never forget it; if you do good to someone, never remember it
- If you don’t get what you like, then learn to like what you get
- Learn from your mistakes
- Accept criticism as a means of self-improvement
- Do not be consumed by hate

Chapter 14 is about the Principles of the Prophet (PBUH) and chapter 21 is full of beautiful supplications from the Quran. I would highly recommend this book.

Night Things, by Michael Talbot

Built by a madwoman during the Victorian era, Lake House is a 160-room mansion in the Adirondacks with stairways that lead nowhere, bizarre rooms designed to distort the senses, endless series of mazelike halls-and a century-long history of violent deaths.

Lauren Montgomery, her son Garrett, and her new rock star husband Stephen Ransom have just arrived at Lake House, anticipating a long and relaxing summer. But what they don't know is that their rental home is actually a labyrinthine puzzle at whose center lurks something unspeakably evil . . .

An inventive and chilling haunted house story in the vein of Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves, Michael Talbot's Night Things (1988) is a page-turning mixture of horror and fantasy from the author of The Delicate Dependency.

"[T]he most ingenious haunted house in years . . . a grand puzzle . . . Haunted-house fans will enjoy the inventive architecture of Lake House." - Kirkus Reviews

"Talbot is a great storyteller . . . Night Things has twists which will pleasantly surprise even jaded horror readers." - Weird Tales Magazine

Not my cup of tea
By S. Smith
I rarely read fiction that features a "star" as a main character. This book reminded me why...I simply don't find them interesting. Nice writing, but when the only character you hold any empathy for is a kid, and you hate kids, you know you're out of your depth. Simply wasn't my cup of tea.

An Absolute Masterpiece of Horror
By Matt Cowan
This is a terrific horror novel. It takes place in an old mansion (of 160 rooms) in the Adirondack mountains that hides an intriguing and unqiue dark secret to it. The lead characters are a young woman, newlywed to a famous rock musician and her son from a previous relationship. The attempt to merge the three into a family is difficult. Things get worse when the boy is visited by spectral beings in the house. I have reread this novel on several occasions and enjoyed it each time. The blurb from publishers weekly above appears to be from some other book entirely and should be discounted. This is a relatively short haunted house style novel that will keep you hooked from beginning to end and deserves to be remembered as one of the greats.

If Winchester House and Hill House Had A Baby, It Would Be Lake House!
By Char's Horror Corner
Lake House is like some dark amalgamation of the Winchester House and Hill House. The angles are all off, there seems to be more room on the inside than the outside indicates, and Lake House has its own dark history. Unfortunately, most of the family staying over the summer are not aware of it.

I won't delve into the story description too much, since the synopsis already does that. I will say that I thought this was an extremely well written, fast paced story. It doesn't have the literary impact of say, Hill House, but it does indeed have an impact.

I loved the 2-3 story lines going on because they always left the me guessing. The character interactions between the wife and her new husband were kind of cliche, but I didn't mind that so much because the narrative only stayed with them briefly and then quickly moved on to the mysteries within Lake House. There were a few of them, and they were out of this world.

For me, it's rare that the ending of a haunted house story delivers. Usually the endings are sort of hokey and they're mostly the reason I don't read many HH tales these days. This book was a delight, well written and well paced, surprising and just plain fun.

Highly recommended to fans of literary horror fiction and haunted houses!

The Mitten, by Jan Brett

The bestselling modern classic, in a sturdy board book edition perfect for little hands.

When Nicki drops his white mitten in the snow, he goes on without realizing that it is missing.

One by one, woodland animals find it and crawl in; first, a curious mole, then a rabbit, a badger and others, each one larger than the last. Finally, a big brown bear is followed in by a tiny brown mouse and what happens next makes for a wonderfully funny climax.

As the story of the animals in the mitten unfolds, the reader can see Nicki in the borders of each page, walking through the woods unaware of what is going on.

In her distinctive style, Jan Brett brings the animals to life with warmth and humor, and her illustrations are full of visual delights and details faithful to the Ukrainian tradition from which the story comes.

"Grandmother knits snow-white mittens that Nikki takes on an adventure. Readers will enjoy the charm and humor in the portrayal of the animals as they make room for each newcomer in the mitten and sprawl in the snow after the big sneeze."

Amazon.com Review
A Ukrainian boy named Nicki wants his grandmother Baba to knit snow-white mittens for him. She warns her grandson that a white mitten will be hard to find if he loses it in the snow, but of course he promptly does just that! What happens next is the surprising part, as a mole takes refuge in the lost mitten, then a rabbit, then a hedgehog, an owl, a badger, and a fox. If you think the mitten might be a wee bit stretched out at this point, just wait: "Then a big bear sniffed at the mitten. The animals were packed in tight, but the bear didn't care. He crawled in anyway." When a tiny mouse squeezes in, her whiskers tickle the bear's nose. He sneezes, and "Aaaaa-aaaaa-ca-chew!" all the animals fly out of their crocheted cave. As the mitten sails through the air, Nicki spots it, reclaims it, and takes it home to show his smiling Baba.

Jan Brett is the illustrator of many well-known folktales, fairy tales, and poems, such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Owl and the Pussycat, by Edward Lear. Her special signature in her detailed artwork is the intricate borders, seen in this book as birch-bark panels with embroidered details and mitten-shaped vignettes offering additional insights into the story line. Brett is at her best when she illustrates animals, and the expressions on the faces of her creatures are a delight. She carefully researched the costumes, furniture, and house in this traditional Ukrainian tale--all are authentic. A fine story to read on a frosty night with a cup of hot chocolate, and if you ever get your fill of The Mitten, you can always try its delightfully original companion book, The Hat, winner of the 1998 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award. (Ages 4 to 8)

From Publishers Weekly
Baba, Nicki's grandmother, knits pure white mittens for him, even though she is afraid that he will lose them in the snow. Sure enough, the first time Nicki is out, he drops one and some animals promptly move into its snug wool interior. First comes a mole, then a rabbit, a hedgehog, an owl, a badger, a fox, a bear and, finally, a mouse. That mouse tickles the bear's nose and he sneezes, dislodging all of the animals at once. Nicki finds his mitten, and takes it home, but Baba is left to wonder about how it became so enormously stretched out. Brett's magnificent paintings feature her usual array of folk details, and this time, intricate knitting tracks, ornate embroidery, the crusty, peeling texture of the birch bark borders and the exquisite patterns found in Baba's homey rooms. Readers will sit back, suspend belief and welcome this tall tale from the Ukrainian tradition. Ages 4-8.

What Might Fitten into a Knitten Mitten? A tale of snowy enchantment!
By Owl
A boy of about 7 or 8 wants warm winter mittens, in white. His grandmother advises as color so the mittens can be found if dropped. But Nikki wants and gets white. Off he goes into the deep snows around the small farmstead---and drops a mitten while climbing a tree. Not noticing, on he goes having a wonderful snowy day. So does a wee mole who crawls in the mitten. So does a rabbit snuggling right down. So do a forestful of animals, all enchantingly portrayed with expressions of increasing annoyance as a ox---a fox and then a great big bear climb into the sot warm mitten.

But---a tiny mouse, a latecomer, climbs on bear's nose causing a big sneeze which propels all the critters hither and yon, and tosses the mitten through the air just in time for Nikki who is searching to catch it. On the last page, Nikki is happily toasting his toes by the fire while Grandma holds up the mittens she has knitted puzzled indeed about why has stretched and stretched.

The story abounds with delights for reader and listeners: the text is written with almost a poetic cadence with lovely sounding words; the illustrations are bright with color and joyously composed, the story tickles the imaginations and offers a grand platform for talking about animals who might or might not fitten into a mitten. For my family, this was a perfect Christmas-tide story even here on a tropical island .

Any Reader Alerts? None at all. This is pure enchantment at a very affordable price. Very highly recommended.

Beautifully written and beautiful illustrations.
By Reese
Jan Brett books are not just wonderful stories, but the illustrations are glorious. She gives a prequel to the next page in the margins of the previous page which creates great discussion for predicting what is going to happen next when reading with young readers. You can't go wrong with this book!
