Because the cost of feeding normally accounts for the largest single input in a production operation, there is a need for a better understanding of nutrition and feeding for those that are going to be involved in livestock production.

The book provides a brief historical perspective of the development of modern livestock production. The ability to provide a safe, nutritious food supply for the world's population has been the driving force behind the development of modern agriculture in the world, with the well-being of the animals and profitability being major considerations. Many advances in genetics, including the development of transgenic animals, and concern about the environment have impacted livestock producers. It is becoming increasingly important to have a better understanding of the effects that feeding and management of livestock have on livestock production systems and environment.

This book will provide the reader with a basic understanding of the nutrition, livestock production systems, and the utilization of feedstuffs. Species chapters will discuss the management and feeding practices that are unique to those species. Feedstuff characteristics and nutrient guidelines are given for various classes of the species in the Appendix Tables. It is our sincere hope that this book will enable the reader to gain knowledge of the principles and management practices used in livestock feeding.

Great Nutrition Resource for Livestock

This text (a slightly older edition) was the required text for my Feeds and Feeding class. This updated version expanded on some topics compared to previous editions. Contents are broken up into four sections: Intro, Feeds for livestock, Livestock species, & Feeding other domesticated species. Chapters for the intro are as follows: 1)Basis for successful feeding of livestock, 2)The gastrointestinal tract and nutrient utilization, and 3)Nutrients: their metabolism and feeding standards. Part two chapters are: 4)Feedstuffs, 5)High-energy feedstuffs, 6)Supplemental protein sources, 7)Roughages, 8)Mineral & vitamin supplementation, 9)Feed additives, 10)Feed laws and labeling, 11)Feed processing, and 12)Ration formulation. Part three chapters are: 13)Feeding swine, 14)Feeding Poultry, 15)Feeding dairy cows, 16)Feeding dairy calves & replacements, 17)Feeding the beef cow herd, and 18)Feeding growing-finishing beef cattle. The final section chapters are: 19)Feeding horses, 20)Sheep nutrition, 21)Goats & goat nutrition, 22)Feeding and nutrition of companion & zoological species, and 23)Feeding rabbits.

The chapter on companion & zoological species covers dogs, cats, birds, reptiles & amphibians, & touches briefly on zoological diets. The cat & dog sections have adequate coverage, although there definitely could be more coverage. However the reptile & amphibian and bird sections could use some fleshing out... and I am not aware of a good alternative source for this information. The authors could have went into more depth on the zoological portion seeing as most other books don't even touch on it and there is actually a need for zoo animal nutrition guides, instead of just extrapolation from similar species (yes this works for some species-a zebra and a horse can't have that much of different requirements right? But what about carnivores... where are the recommendations for them?). I do understand that it is hard to include information like this because it largely doesn't exist, but if you want to include information in your text on it, go into a bit more depth... are the extrapolations that zoo nutritionists do based on body weight? age? reproductive status? these would be ideal points to cover since this book gets used by a lot of aspiring veterinary/zoo/biological science students. Hopefully in future editions, the authors will try to get experts to help "flesh out" the above discussed sections to fill the need since most of the other nutrition texts don't even cover some of the topics yet.

Overall this book is a great resource and I highly recommend it to livestock producers, dog & cat owners, undergraduate students in animal or biological sciences, and anyone looking for solid information on animal nutrition as the majority of the principles apply to all species. For someone looking for additional nutrition references I also recommend Animal Feeding and Nutrition. Between these two books, most of the small gaps in the information get covered. Both are great references.

Ordered this for a class. The textbook was received within the stated time and in perfect condition. This textbook is written in an easy-to-read way; very simplistic and informative. Will definitely serve as a good reference tool for anyone dealing with animal nutrition. More complex ideas/information is broken down within the text so you can understand quickly what the authors are trying to get across. Includes a lot of tables, graphs, and figures for reference (even for specific species).

About the Author

Yang Cai is a computer scientist at Carnegie Mellon University, where he has taught graduate courses in cognitive video, multimedia, human algorithms, creativity, and innovation process. Cai is the founder of the Visual Intelligence Studio and author of the emerging theories of instinctive computing, ambient diagnostics, and empathic computing. Absolutely Outstanding!

Scepter has done a great service by binding the 4 Gospels and the book of Acts into one very nicely laid out, quality, hardcover volume. The only thing missing from this, as opposed to the individual paperback editions, is the text of the Latin Vulgate. Most people (like myself) won't find that to be a problem, and what's left is the text of the RSV Catholic Edition (not to be confused with the inclusive language NRSV) and the full commentary from the paperback editions.
This is the first Bible commentary that I have been absolutely unable to put down. For starters, this commentary, as far as I can tell, is absolutely faithful to the Magisterium, and the explations truly reflect the interpretation of Scripture in light of 2,000 years of Biblical scholarship. Within the commentary, one often finds quotes from Saints, Fathers, and Church documents which address the passage, something that I find indispensible and immeasureably interesting.
The work is also extremely well cross-referenced, and provides an excellent opportunity for in-depth study. This is a work intended for those truly interested in deepening their understanding of Scripture in light of the Orthodox Catholic teaching.
All in all, this is the best commentary on the Gospels and Acts that I've seen. I only wish that Scepter would release the rest of the NT in hardcover format...

The best Scriptural commentary available

The advantage of this compilation of the Navarre Bible's separate Gospel narratives and Acts is that it preserves the extended commentary of the individual volumes. Although the similar Navarre New Testament Compact Edition is excellent, its commentary is abbreviated. All the books in the Navarre series are characterized by fidelity to the Magisterium, an assumed and defended historicity, reflections by Church Fathers and Saints, and contextual explanations. There's simply no better Bible commentary available and it makes for wonderful personal devotional reading or a text for group study. Expensive, but worth every penny.

I have been using the Navarre Bible, Gospels and Acts for a bible study at church. I have found the commentary to be one of the best that I have read. It delivers extensive historical background as well as being equally strong in spiritual growth and development. This bible came highly reccommended to us by our associate pastor who has served for several years as a seminary instructor.

The Power and the Glory

The English Baptist preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon was a man subject to periods of depression. When he would find himself in such a state, he would call his wife, Susannah, and say, "Fetch me down Baxter!" This was in reference to the book The Reformed Pastor by the great Puritan divine Richard Baxter. This book always excited Spurgeon and pulled him up, as it were, by his calling. After reading a few pages of Baxter, Spurgeon would again feel the fire of God reviving him.

The Kingdom and the Power: Rediscovering the Centrality of the Church by Peter J. Leithart is my Baxter. If ever I need the excitement of God to well up in my heart anew, I will call out to my wife, "Fetch me down Leithart!"

With the pen of a poet, Leithart sets the hungry soul on fire. Like a treasure hunter, he guides the reader through room after room of the great palace that is the Kingdom of God, exploring each facet in all its glory and finally arriving at the very center of the Kingdom, the room where all the treasure is kept, the living room where the people of God sit enthroned with Him on the love seat between the cherubim. This room is the Church. This is the center of God's purpose and God's Kingdom.

There are two chapters in particular that I will go back and read through again and again. They are chapters 8 and 9, "The People of the Kingdom," and "On Earth as It Is in Heaven." In these two chapters Leithart, without even mentioning the modernist theologies of liberalism and dispensationalism, destroys them both by expounding what God says about the Church and her mandate in the Kingdom.

Allow me to entice you with just one quote. "The Church, as a collaborator with God, is called to nothing less than world conquest, world construction, in the widest possible sense. She is called to labor by God's power to bring every man, woman, and child into the life and under the dominion of the kingdom; to work to see that every institution in every nation conforms itself to Christ's commandments; to bring every thought into captivity to Christ (2 Cor 10:5). Her mission is to see that every human being brings every created thing into service to God, so that the Adamic commandment in both its royal and priestly dimensions is fulfilled. So, the Church has a mission, and what a mission!" (p. 173-174). How's that for comprehensiveness?

I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to see the vastly panoramic vision of the Kingdom of God anew - or for the first time! But beware, this is one of those books that will compel you into joyful action.

The Kingdom and the Liturgical/Sacramental model

In modern times, the Church emulates the world. Saints of all denominations dress, talk, and pray like the world-especially in the house of the Lord. Today's worship is just another production in which we can feel good about ourselves so we can go home and finish making Sunday dinner. Personal testimonies substitute Biblical preaching. Rock concerts replace the Psalms of David. Yes, even cookies and orange juice supplants bread and wine in many congregations. Where is the Church's hope? Does it have any? Or will the Church continue to slide down the slippery slope becoming more and more like world? Peter Leithart's Kingdom and the Power says no, the Church will not become like the world. Rather, the world will become like the Church. In his book, Leithart declares that the power and blessing of God's kingdom are realized in the worship and through the sacraments of the Church.
Many details make this book unique in its field. First, the emphasis on the liturgical (or sacramental) model sets this book apart from most books in Protestantism and Reformed camps.
Another aspect making the book peerless is the refreshing optimistic outlook. Postmillenialism is refreshing.
Moreover, Leithart supports his ideas with weighty documentation. He cites verses for nearly every new-sprung thought. He cites items obvious to some to make it easy on the reader who needs evidence for every point. Furthermore, Leithart writes very concise. He does not bundle the reader down with point after point phrased in several different ways. Interesting analogies and stories keep the reader entertained yet do not add to the labor of reading the book.
I found this book to be very important to the increasing pile of books on the table. First, the book is consistently reformed. Leithart makes no apologies about what he believes. Second, the work is simple enough for a common reader yet not dumbed down. Third, the invigorating outlook excites the reader.

An accurate assessment of ecclesiology

This text can be summed up in a paragraph found on pgs 212 & 213 - "In the Bible, the kingdom of God is mainly concerned with the church, her sacraments and worship, her discipline and teaching, and her ministries of mercy ... the really big kingdom activity - the act that radically changes the world - is the gathering of the people of God on the Lord's day at the heavenly banquet table, when God's people hear His Word, offer humble petitions to the King, and feast on the flesh and blood of Jesus."

The Kingdom and the Power is a healthy antidote to different forms of liberation theology or millenarism, which secularize "the kingdom," which was so central to Jesus' teaching in the Gospels. Leithart sets out to show how the Biblical worldview of authentic power lies in Christian worship by means of the liturgy. He also gives solid grounds for what is popularly referred to as a "high ecclesiology."

The Biblical insights Leithart gives in this text build upon one another organically, and from atop the mountain of a Catholic worldview, I can see it leading the reader right on up to where I stand. I say this because having immersed myself in the Magisterial documents of the Catholic Church (especially those of the Second Vatican Council), the chapters in this book synthesize much of what has been expressed in Lumen Gentium, Gaudium et Spes, and Sacrosanctum Concilium.

It introduces a new method of waste disposal which can be useful to people everywhere; houses, classrooms or offices. The book will tell you about the history of Bokashi. It is a very interesting and educative book. It tells you a lot about recycling food waste in your house. The author takes you through each step in a methodical way which can be comprehended easily. The history of Bokashi is also a good thing to know. Better Bokashi improvises on the the original method of Bokashi and gives the world the best composting methods of our times. The author also tells us the various benefits of Bokashi. The current Bokashi we see is just a twist on the ancient practice which was used in olden times.

The author has written it very well with pictures to make readers understand it better. It is direct and honest. It is a very useful book which helps readers to recycle the waste in a useful manner. An excellent book packed with information.

Great Read for the Environment Conscious Individual

I received a free copy of this book from storycartel.com. I am always looking for better/smarter ways to recycle and deal with the waste I create on a daily basis. Mr. Veri has written a how-to manual on just that. This book teaches you an easy, cost-effective way to deal with your food wastes that can be easily incorporated into your daily routine. Unlike with some other methods, the Bokashi method can be used in an apartment, condo, mobile home etc. I would highly recommend this book to anyone curious about a new, different way to compost that is more time and cost effective than other popular methods!

BOKASHI!

Wow, I had never heard of Bokashi before picking up this book over at Story Cartel. Though I won't claim that I completely understand the science, I found most of the jargon a'la MyCrobz accessible. After reading about the fundamental differences between the pros and cons of Bokashi vs. traditional composting methods, I felt like I understood it all better. The book was colorful, and fun. I would recommend this book for anyone who wishes to explore alternatives to traditional composting which can take up a lot of space.

Kindle version is extremely frustrating

I'm changing my original 2 star review below to 4 stars. While I'm still very frustrated because the control characters are too small to read on a kindle, the material is too good for me to discourage people from reading this book. The material is excellent and I've learned a lot just from the text. Once you've outgrown the beginners Photoshop books this is a great book on more advanced techniques.

I'm really frustrated with the kindle version of this book. They symbols he uses for the control, alt, and shift keys are way too small to make out. If I ever get over being mad, I'll probably buy the paper version of the book. The content seems to be that good. Too bad it's not usable in this form

A great reference for PS CC

This book has so many good tips. I bought it for a class, didn't really end up needing it, but kept it anyways because it's a pretty good resource. I know we live in an age where we can just Google anything we have a question about, but sometimes it seems I can't quite word my inquiry properly and I'm left frustrated. This book fills in the gaps. As a side note, the accompanying videos are hilariously awful. They also contain good info, but the editing is quite amusing. I recommend this book if you are like me and prefer to have a physical reference available in addition to the Internet.

A Clasic, but not by Moses -

This book is a classic of hoodoo, and also is used in Hex work. It is highly thought of by most of those who have used it, and is reccomended as background reading for anyone interested in Hoodoo, Folk Magic, Hex work, African American magical practicves, and similar subjects.

This is an excellent resource for rootworkers. The author compiled a lot of great information on Moses including history, drawings, and references to biblical sources. There are seals and spells for many purposes and a wonderful chapter called "The Great Voodoo Man of the Bible". I highly reccomend this book.

A very interesting book to read. There is a lot of information in this to get the reader to look for more information on the subject. It helps give a cultural frame of reference to those that feel that this may be " the truth".

About the Author
Demetria Clark is an internationally known herbalist, aromatherapist, and midwife. She has studied and apprenticed with renowned herbal practitioners, including Rosemary Gladstar, Jane Smolnik, and Susun Weed, and received her aromatherapy education from the Pacific Institute of Aromatherapy. Demetria pioneered online herbal education by founding Heart of Herbs School, which offers certification courses in herbalism and aromatherapy and has trained over 1,000 students. A Must Have

This book is a must have for me! It was very beneficial during my pregnancy and it's something I will continue to have on hand and recommend to other women. Whether you're doing birth work, a first time mom, or not a first time mom-- there is a lot of information and benefit in Demetria's book as usual. Learn how to safely use aromatherapy from the author-- who is a mom, doula, midwife, and all around knowledgeable aromatherapist. She gets it, and wants us to benefit.

I HIGHLY recommend this book!

I'd like to start off by saying that I am a mother of 12 (just had #12 six weeks ago), a birth doula, and a childbirth educator. I own and use a lot of herbal information books. This book is one of my favorites. Unlike most herbal remedy books, she spells out exactly how to make various remedies. She also teaches you how to develop your own based on your own individual needs. There are sections on oil blends, herbal teas, essential oil usage, making lozenges, liniments, salves, extracts, and compresses, although this isn't the entire list.

Being a midwife she addresses all the common concerns women have pre-pregnancy, throughout pregnancy, and postpartum. From depression, to stretch marks, to hemorrhoids, to breastfeeding, she covers every ailment you or your clients could possibly have with various remedies to choose from.

I HIGHLY recommend her book. It is one of my favorites that I use for reference all the time now. I guarantee you will not be disappointed with this purchase!

When I first began reading it, I had the bias that it would be something of a resource for myself, as a birth worker, but difficult to encourage my clients to read. I was wrong.

I have already recommended this book to three clients and will continue to do so as the wealth of information and read-friendliness of Aromatherapy and Herbal Remedies is sure to make this a regular on bookshelves across America. Her book is broken down into aromatherapy for pregnancy, labor and birth, and breastfeeding, and remedies for pregnancy, labor and birth, and postpartum/breastfeeding. She also includes an introduction to herbs, aromatherapy, and information on how to grow, harvest, and prepare your own ingredients.

She has a concise list of herbs and essential oils, as well as their uses and contraindications. Additionally, she provides a substantial section on recipes for everything from teas to poultices, and diffusing blends to massage oils/salves. I'm excited to refer to this book time and time again and have no doubt it will become a staple on many birth workers book shelves.
