Challenging, disturbing, revelatory and genuinely original, Smail's work has had too little influence to date in the world of academic and professional psychology. Perhaps this is because it is 20, maybe 50, years ahead of its time and doesn't satify our contemporary demand for 'serious' (that is tunnel-visioned, involuted and introverted) psychology. There's a surging current of analysis here that should be read by all students of psychology. And it is beautifully written. Clinical psychology employs an individualist cosmology, and sees the relief of distress, and by implication the cause of distress, to be internal to the individual. Yet we know that in times of economic distress, when people's jobs and material security are threatened, rates of depression, suicide, domestic violence, among others, rise significantly. This book explores the influence of external factors, major among them being the dynamics of a capitalist economy, on internal or psychological stability. This book is very good at spelling out this issue.

The men often overshadowed the women of the Bible, but in JUST A SISTER AWAY: Understanding the Timeless Connection Between the Women of Today and Women in the Bible, author Renita J. Weems seeks to bring their stories forth through a new revelation. She delves beneath the surface information presented in the Bible to let readers see that these women, despite the roles they held, were women of valor and substance. Much has been written about their roles during biblical times, but as the author notes, not much is written about how they felt about themselves, their roles or each other. Ms. Weems modernizes some of these familiar, and some not so familiar, stories of women and how they treated other women to gauge how they really felt about themselves and their positions.

There were thirteen stories in all, complete with lessons and analyses. In Chapter One is the familar and noteworthy story of Hagar and Sarah in "A Mistress, a Maid, and No Mercy." This reconstructed story tells of where Sarah sends her maid Hagar to her husband Abraham, showing the feelings of each woman as it relates to jealousy, faithfulness, low self-esteem and self worth. My favorite story of this book is the story of Martha and Mary in "My Sister's Keeper." In this chapter, Ms. Weems retells the story of the day that Jesus and his disciples come to visit in the home of Martha and Mary. Martha is busy preparing the meal while Mary sits at the feet of Jesus as the men are talking. What makes this story so unique is the way that Ms. Weems tells it by using the feelings and emotions of first Martha then Mary. And their feelings are demonstrated by the way they treat, or mistreat, each other.

To say that I was amazed at some of Ms. Weems' interpretations is an understatement. I was in total awe of some and nodding my head in agreement in others as if I was actually present. She uses the stories of women in the Bible highlighting their failings, their struggles and their triumphs to show each of us how we can overcome adversity to obtain the blessings that have been promised to us and how we today still share the same struggles. A few of the stories were a little hard to grasp simply because of the sacred nature of them, but Ms. Weems' style of writing was one that didn't impose, but rather made you consider the possibility. JUST A SISTER AWAY is also structured like a workbook complete with deep, probing questions at the end of each chapter designed to challenge the reader to analyze their personal relationships with both women and men and apply some of the lessons taught. I enjoyed this inspirational and thought-provoking book and I encourage every woman to get a copy.

Each chapter adds a term to the balance equation, highlighting that term's effects on the physical behavior of the system and the underlying mathematical description. Chapters familiarize students with modeling and developing mathematical expressions based on the analysis of a control volume, the derivation of the governing differential equations, and the solution to those equations with appropriate boundary conditions.

Part II builds on the diffusive transport balance equation by introducing convective transport terms, focusing on partial, rather than ordinary, differential equations. The text describes paring down the microscopic equations to simplify the models and solve problems, and it introduces macroscopic versions of the balance equations for when the microscopic approach fails or is too cumbersome. The text discusses the momentum, Bernoulli, energy, and species continuity equations, including a brief description of how these equations are applied to heat exchangers, continuous contactors, and chemical reactors. The book also introduces the three fundamental transport coefficients: the friction factor, the heat transfer coefficient, and the mass transfer coefficient in the context of boundary layer theory. The final chapter covers the basics of radiative heat transfer, including concepts such as blackbodies, graybodies, radiation shields, and enclosures. The third edition incorporates many changes to the material and includes updated discussions and examples and more than 70 new homework problems.

About the Author

Joel L. Plawsky received his BS in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan and his MSCEP and ScD in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After graduation, Joel worked for Corning Inc. in its research division before returning to academia at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is currently a professor of chemical engineering in the Howard P. Isermann Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. Joel was a NASA Faculty Fellow in 1999 and 2000 and has had four experiments fly in the microgravity environment of the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers where he has served as the chairman of the Transport and Energy Processes Division and has received the Institute’s Herbie Epstein Award. Joel serves on the editorial board of Chemical Engineering Communications and is the holder of five patents.

This book is not about technology of big data. analytics or any type of predictive models it is about how organizations wisely use big data to deliver value for their businesses.

Great real world insights on big data

This book provided great insights into how big data is applied across many industries. Its easy to read and each page confirms to a standardised template making it simple to use as a reference book.

I would recommend this book to those new to big data as an initial starting point to its many applications. This book is otherwise to light on information to those that already have hands on experience and wants to dig deeper.

Great high level summaries, but very little detail

If you're looking for a very simple overview of how big data is being put to use then this is the right book. I was hoping for more details than were available in this particular volume. The stories are high level summaries that take between 5-10 minutes each to read. This is great if all you're looking for is anecdotal information about big data so you can talk to others about the topic. If you're looking to truly learn about big data and the technology that helps us take advantage of it I think you'd need to find another book.

Given the cost of the book I'm surprised at the content inside of it. It is definitely not worth 30 dollars. If you're fortunate enough to have a work subscription to something like Safari Books etc. check that out, it might be included free.
