In this book, T. L. Short corrects widespread misconceptions of Peirce's theory of signs and demonstrates its relevance to contemporary analytic philosophy of language, mind and science. Peirce's theory of mind, naturalistic but nonreductive, bears on debates of Fodor and Millikan, among others. His theory of inquiry avoids foundationalism and subjectivism, while his account of reference anticipated views of Kripke and Putnam. Peirce's realism falls between 'internal' and 'metaphysical' realism and is more satisfactory than either. His pragmatism is not verificationism; rather, it identifies meaning with potential growth of knowledge. Short distinguishes Peirce's mature theory of signs from his better-known but paradoxical early theory. He develops the mature theory systematically on the basis of Peirce's phenomenological categories and concept of final causation. The latter is distinguished from recent and similar views, such as Brandon's, and is shown to be grounded in forms of explanation adopted in modern science.

Review
"...a major achievement, a singularly important work on Pierce's theory of signs and one of the most important works to ever be published on Peirce." - Journal of the History of Philosophy
"...his attempt to demonstrate the relevance of Peirce's semiotics in contemporary philosophical though hinges on a balanced interplay between convincing arguments and documented research. This book insightfully unravels the necessity of overcoming the contemporary philosophical tendency to 'atomize issues', and there is reason to believe that Short's comprehensive study will set the agenda for interesting future developments in Peircean scholarship." --Chiara Ambrosio, University College London: Philosophy in Review

A gem
By An Outsider
This is the most serious account of Peirce's theory of signs. And this is so at least for three reasons. First, Short takes into account Peirce's writings in chronological order, and in doing so, he finds three fatal flaws in Peirce's early theory which are solved in the later version. Second, it is the first published book (not article) in which it is explained the importance of the idea of 'purpose' in Peirce's semeiotics and he demonstrates its constitute role in Peirce's sign definition. Third, Peirce's 'expanded' classification of signs is clearly exposed and its possible uses are contrasted with contemporary theories, and thus in Short's book Peirce's semeiotics becomes relevant for nowadays epistemology, philosophy of language and mind. Besides, it is well written (not as this review) and the exposition is clear. The shortcoming I found is that its title is misleading: it does not cover the whole range of Peirce's semeiotics but only the first branch, it is to say, the 'stechiology' or 'speculative grammar'.
Briefly put, this is the very best book on Peirce's semeiotics.

Excellent Understanding of Peirce's Abductive Conceptualism...
By Lloyd Gillespie
Why is it Einstein is respected for his scientific 'Theories of Relativity', while Peirce is ignored for his__all important__scientific 'Theories of Realist Objective Conceputalism and Abduction...?' For over 100 years, the clearest ideas ever put forward on how the mind actually functions, were put forward by Charles Sanders Peirce__and for the last 7 years I've been studying him non-stop__and never have I read a better and more thorough book on his ideas than Mr. Short offers__I highly reccommend it...
I only have one minor problem with Short's book, and that's his fact of not respecting Peirce's spelling of 'esthetics'(in most places) as verses aesthetics, as this is also central to his critical divisions of ideas contributing to pragmatism, ethics and logic's central premise__values' integrations possibilia. I'm yet to see anyone make this clear 'aesthetic/esthetic distinction' point, and thoroughly mention why it's so needed. If we are ever to bring a sensible values system within reach of our science systems, we'll need to understand why morality can not be directly updated through and to ethics__unless a finely understood esthetics is known and realized to be needed as a bridge vehicle between morality and ethics__since ethics is mathematical, whereas morality is non-methematical__while the dualistic concept of the 'aesthetic/esthetic distinction' distinguishes both sides in one single concept__beauty and order__thus allowing real-time conceptual integration. This very important point needs working up by many authors, so the academic studies of Peirce may become complete__as aesthetics is the psychological side of the 'aesthitic/esthetic distinctions'__whereas 'esthetics' is Peirce's main system of 'A Science of Goals'__or the logically ordered side of the same distinction's difference engine...
Anyway, as far as my 7 years of constant daily research goes, Short's book is still__by far__the best source of Peirce's ideas, especially as relates to modernity's needs' explications__Excellent job Thomas... Thanks
