Fun, Easy Read

I read this in the original German....I hope the inaccurate cover (in the book, she is reborn as a beagle, not a great dane) does not speak to the quality of the translation....

All I can say is that it is a fun run, not very accurate when it comes to animal life or even religion, but it ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE.

Read it for enjoyment, not enlightenment, and you will have a fun time reading it.

It's a good book

Ok, it's not an excellent book but it was enjoyable and it got me thinking and I like that about a book - one that stays with you for a while after you've read it. I figure if you walk away from a book and never give it a moment's thought, then I don't think you learned from it and it thus failed you in some way. This book got me thinking about my own "karma" and how I live my life and whether or not I deserve something better in the "afterlife". And I'm still thinking... so that's a good thing!

Now I do think that if you are going to write/read a book about the afterlife, then in some way to the reader, it should be believable. I seem to have a read a few lately - I liked the ghost in Twenties Girl and loved Molly Marx in The Late Lamented Molly Marx because I could "deal" with the way they were presented... Not too far fetched, didn't do anything too bizarre other than stick around past their due date. I thought the same about the dead girl in The Lovely Bones until she somehow took over some live girl's body to have sex with her first crush. That's when Alice Sebold lost me... it was just plain stupid/ridiculous.

I would have to say this book is half half... I can believe the first parts but not so much the last... but it's ok because it's meant to be a fun book as it is told with humour.... not a recount of a being murdered and the effect on you and your family. It's good clean fun with a message - that you need to live your life in a good way and be kind to others...

I will be honest - I did not fall in love with the main character and that always helps. I don't know if that is because the book is translated from German to English and things are "lost in translation." I did however, very much like the Casanova character and think his addition was simply brilliant! I am not too fussy about the supposed lack of research involved in ant colonies and lives of guinea pigs (as per the other review) so ok with the way it was written. Same with dogs... Having now read this book and The Art of Racing in the Rain, find it fascinating however that humans are to be aspired to as do believe dogs are more noble characters and perhaps it should be the other way around! All in all, like I said, it's not a great book but it's enjoyable and I liked it.

Completamente divertido y que en m�s de una ocasi�n te descubres a t� mismo imaginado que es lo que hubieses hecho en su lugar.

Si buscas un libro con el que divertirte un fin de semana, te lo recomiendo encarecidamente.

About the Author
James A. Henretta is a Professor Emeritus of American History at the University of Maryland, College Park. His publications include The Evolution of American Society, 1700-1815: An Interdisciplinary Analysis; "Salutary Neglect": Colonial Administration under the Duke of Newcastle; Evolution and Revolution: American Society, 1600-1820; The Origins of American Capitalism; and an edited volume, Republicanism and Liberalism in America and the German States, 1750-1850. Recent publications include "Magistrates, Common Law Lawyers, Legislators: The Three Legal Systems of British America," in The Cambridge History of Law in America and "Charles Evans Hughes and the Strange Death of Liberal America," in Law and History Review, derived from his ongoing research on the liberal state in America: New York, 1820-1975. During his career, Henretta taught at Sussex, Princeton, UCLA, and Boston University. He served as a Fulbright Senior Scholar in Australia and as the Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University.

Eric Hinderaker is Professor of History and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Utah.� His research explores early modern imperialism, relations between Europeans and Native Americans, and comparative colonization.� His publications include The Two Hendricks: Unraveling a Mohawk Mystery, which won the Dixon Ryan Fox Prize; Elusive Empires: Constructing Colonialism in the Ohio Valley, 1673-1800; and, with Peter C. Mancall, At the Edge of Empire: The Backcountry in British North America.� He is currently working on two books, one about the Boston Massacre and another, with Rebecca Horn, on patterns of European colonization in the Americas.

Rebecca Edwards is a Professor of History at Vassar College. Her research interests focus on the post-Civil War era and include electoral politics, environmental history, and the history of women and gender roles. She is the author of Angels in the Machinery: Gender in American Party Politics from the Civil War to the Progressive Era and New Spirits: Americans in the "Gilded Age," 1865-1905. She is currently working on a biography of women's rights advocate and People's Party orator Mary E. Lease.Robert O. Self is Professor of History at Brown University. His research focuses on urban history, American politics, and the post-1945 United States. He is the author of American Babylon: Race and the Struggle for Postwar Oakland, which won four professional prizes, including the James A. Rawley Prize from the Organization of American Historians, and All in the Family: The Realignment of American Democracy Since the 1960s. He is currently at work on a book about the centrality of houses, cars, and children to family consumption in the twentieth-century United States. He teaches courses on the postwar United States; the history of political movements; the history of gender, sex, and the family; and urban history.

Good Practice for the Essays

I found this book useful for practicing the essay portion of the California exam. Generally, it gives you a guide for writing about particular subject areas, followed by several practice essays. There is a guide for judging your score on each essay and a grid for keeping track of your overall scores. The author also provides other general guidelines for "successful" essay writing. It was helpful, for the most part. The essay answers were better than others that I've used; more realistic. A note: some subject areas, perhaps by their nature, were not quite as clear as others. I would highly recommend this book for the self-studier or for those seeking more essay practice (of which you can never have too much). My one criticism is the pathetic number of typographical errors and mistakes in the book. Many are just annoying, but some of them interfere with the clarity and meaning of the text. The editor must have dropped the ball on this. Nevertheless, it's a good book for practice.

Really helped for California Bar Essays

Some of my friends went to the first Bar/Bri essay lecture and it seemed to just click. I got my first graded essay back, with a respectable score, but then again, it was torts. I really struggled with contracts. Another friend used this book (this book is an abbreviated and newer version than the older 2 volume books which I used for the 2010 July bar exam), and she said her bar/bri essay graders really seemed to notice the difference. I started using this book the second week of essay practices. My score immediately was better with the graders, but even better, I was much more confident with the essay portion of the California Bar. Towards the end of Bar/Bri I also used the Bar Exam Survival Kit and the flashcards. I think this is a great way to supplement Bar/Bri or to study if you are a more visual learner. By the time the actual exam rolled around, I felt really ready for whatever essay was thrown my way. I think that is the most valuable part of this series, building your confidence and a strategy so that no matter what they throw at you, you know what to do. Because this book helps you plan for it and practice for it. I would definitely recommend these books to anyone taking the California Bar exam!

The "Popol Vuh," written in a Mayan language but a European script, is the most substantial surviving account of the Maya view of their own history, including that of their gods and divine ancestors, and has presented a host of problems for translators. The Tedlock translation of 1985 added new information to the work of many distinguished predecessors, and made substantial parts of the narrative clear (or at least much clearer).

The fact that a fairly extensively revised edition of this book was not only possible, but necessary, in 1996, a decade after its first publication, might have discouraged the publisher from continuing to call the new version "Definitive" on the cover. The title page more precisely calls it a Revised Edition of "Popol Vuh: The Mayan Book of the Dawn of Life ... with commentary based on the ancient knowledge of the modern Quiche Maya." However, "Definitive" seems to be the marketing buzzword. But how would a third edition be described? (Dennis Tedlock has recently -- 2003 -- returned to the writings of the post-Conquest Maya aristocrats who actually produced the existing "Popol Vuh," in "Rabinal Achi: A Mayan Drama of War and Sacrifice," so it is clear that his work in the area continues.)

In fact, the work of Dennis and Barbara Tedlock with living Quiche Maya ritualists (priests / diviners / shamans), which, in the first edition, added so much to understanding this early post-Conquest text, was part of a larger expansion of Maya studies, including a more complete decipherment of ancient inscriptions, and greatly improved studies of Maya art. It is now possible to recognize events, and even characters, of the "Popol Vuh" in art centuries older, and their prototypes a millennium earlier. Meso-American cultures have been re-analyzed, and lost details recovered, as part of a major, and very rapid, shift in understanding.

As an example: a large part of the story of "Popol Vuh" involves games played in ball-courts, in this world and the world of the dead; a major collection of papers on this theme, in Mayan and other cultures, "The Mesoamerican Ballgame," was based on a conference held the same year the first edition of Tedlock's translation appeared (Scarborough and Wilcox, 1991).

Another change was the adoption of a new official system for writing Mayan languages in the Roman alphabet, one devised, for the first time, by native speakers of the various languages. This adds considerably to etymological and grammatical precision, but enormously complicates recognizing words and names in older systems. (Anyone familiar with the juggling of Wade-Giles and Pinyin transliterations of Chinese will be only too familiar with the kind of adjustment process for ordinary readers.)

Tedlock has attempted, with considerable success, to incorporate this new information, and the new transcription system, into the old structure of the book. In the process, besides adding fascinating illustrations and fine-tuning the translation, he has restructured the introduction and notes. Some interesting personal observations are gone, or greatly reduced. References to older literature, often with Tedlock's reconsiderations, have generally been replaced by citations of more recent studies. Once debatable points have been given firm answers, and new questions have been raised. Some material which, at a first glance, I assumed to be missing, turned out, on close examination (with copies of both editions open in front of me, and the help of a lot of post-it flags), to have been broken up or consolidated in different contexts. In a few places, however, the strain shows, as a once-clear line of argument is disrupted. The sheer complication of the material explicated, in which social, cosmic / astronomical, and agricultural references are constantly intertwined, probably made this inevitable.

Archeological and epigraphic material has somewhat eclipsed in prominence the modern Maya contribution to this edition, although for fuller information it was always necessary to turn to Barbara Tedlock's "Time and the Highland Maya."

Among more recent publications of considerable value for understanding the mythological and astronomical material, Susan Milbrath's "Star Gods of the Maya: Astronomy in Art, Folklore, and Calendars" (1999) is exhausting, but I found it particularly illuminating. A series of books of which the late Linda Schele was co-author or co-editor (The Blood of Kings," 1986; "The Forest of Kings," 1990; "Maya Cosmos: Three Thousand Years on the Shaman's Path," 1993; and "The Code of Kings," 1999) are more popular in style, and very rewarding; unfortunately, like everything else in Mayan studies, they have dated very quickly, and the reader should always keep the date of publication in mind. Technical studies -- linguistic, epigraphic, archeological, art-historical -- are now abundant, but also harder for me to judge.

[Addendum, June 2014: At about the time I was writing this review in 2004, a two-volume translation-with commentary-and-texts was being published by O Books in the UK and US; Allen J. Christenson's "Popol Vuh: The Sacred Book of the Maya" (2003), and "Popol Vuh: Literal Poetic Version" (2004). This treatment was reprinted by the University of Oklahoma Press in 2007-2008, and is still in print. As the reader of these Amazon reviews will notice, some feel called upon to rank the two translations. I don't (although I have reviews of Christenson's two volumes in progress as I add this note).]

Great edition of an essential world text - lots of helps

The Maya did not divide their everyday lives and religion. In fact, they didn't have a religion in our sense at all. Their everyday lives were bound up in visions, stories of the heavens, earth, past, and future that were not separate from the reality of their everyday experience. This book, the "Popol Vuh" means Council Book. That is, it is a book for the Lords to consult. One of its other titles is "The Light That Came From Beside the Sea". It is a document of the Quiche Maya who lived (and still live) in a portion of what is present day Guatemala.

The "Popol Vuh" tells the essential myth of the ball game and the hero twins. Its story is far too involved and strange to try and explain it in this review. The story explains things about the Sun, Moon, and Venus in their play across the heavens. It prepares the living for what awaits them in Xibalba (the awful place below the earth). And there is constant gratitude for the knowledge of the creation of men from maize and the light of understanding this book brings them. The various sacred places of mountains, caves, and of ritual sacrifice are all here and powerfully expressed.

Dennis Tedlock translated the text into clear and very readable English. However, that is not sufficient for the uninitiated to understand. So, Tedlock provides us with an introductory essay to help us understand the context of these stories. At the back he also provides notes on the text arranged by page number, a glossary of terms (which we desperately need to read the book), a wonderful bibliography for further reading, and an index.

Now, a couple of things to keep in mind when you read this book (and you should). This text has one written source, and it is written in the Mayan language with a Western alphabet. Also, this copy is post Conquest so there is no real way to know how the story was changed or influenced by the Christian stories that were also (forcibly) taught to the Maya, if at all. If you end up believing that this story is an intact retelling of the true Myth without Christian influences, there are some pretty strange and wonderful parallels. If you are uncomfortable with some of the parallels, then you will want to explain them away by claiming corruption by the Christian conquerors. Take your pick. No one really knows.

Terrific edition of an important text that you can really enjoy reading and adding to your understanding of the world and the total range of the human experience.

Much more than a translation

Tedlock's translation is far more than a translation. Because the meaning of the Popol Vuh, he tells us, is situationally dependent (i.e., is likely to change depending on the context in which the reader approaches the text), Tedlock had to receive formal training as Mayan "daykeeper" (shamanistic reader of the Popol Vuh) before he approached the text. The results are amazing -- a depth of commentary and a tapestry of images that will require a dozen readings before I can begin to comprehend it, but intriguing enough that I bought a copy for my wife for Christmas as well. No folklorist should be without this work.

The E generation.

As a biology student, I was rather skeptical why Audretsch's "The Entrepreneurial Society" would be relevant to a "contemporary studies" class.

First off, let me say this book is fun. Really fun for a non-natural science book.

Audretsch provides a great way of helping me understand my position in soceity while teasing what and how society was for my parents and grandparents.

Unfortunately, Audretsch will never be on Oprah, but his topics relentlessy are on Oprah'; why my generation has a hard time understanding our parents, why health care can affect my job or lack of one, or why university's and tuition may determine my career choices before I even graduate.

I feel the best therapeutic translator I have for my family is this book. The book serves as a sensible Dr. Phil for white collar and middle class families looking to understand what lays ahead for them.

The book really highlights how and why we are changing under a backdrop of global change and why this ain't my mom's world anymore. Audretsch plunges into why the economy must explicitly change and why this creates tension between traditions and continents.

One chapter in particular was very relevant to my current situation. In his "Not Your Father's University" he offers prophetic insights. A must read for any natural scientist hoping to be successful. I don't really know if he has a natural science background, but he speaks the word of God in this chapter on why and how universities must adapt with knowledge creation, especially for me to get a better job, than under the old system of distant and isolated Ivory Towers of science.

I hate it when people say the book is a must read, but it is. It helps explain what and how we must changes and not necessarily be too routed in the tradition of our father's mold. Rather it is up to us, not the X or Y generation, but the Entrepreneurial generation, to innovate and make the most of a world where the future's only tradition will be to break with past tradition.

Great book for college grads

I received this book as a gift from my CEO and completed the reading in a couple of days and found it to be outstanding. David Audretsch gave an excellent and coherent framework for the fundamental transformation of key economic models and its relationship with key cultural, social, educational and political aspects. Having spent many years with a large and dominant company in the old managed economy and also Silicon Valley ones, I can especially internalize with his insights for that portion of the model.

I feel that this is a must read especially for colleges grads who are stepping into long journeys of global opportunities.

I wish it was longer

I just purchased this for my Kindle and was fairly impressed. I've been wanting to see more books on any type of draw poker. This was pretty much a tease to me seeing how it's what, 20 pages? But for $7 you can't go wrong (that's almost a whopping big bet). The "Chapter" is basically Barry talking about what he thinks to be correct play in this intense Korean game of action, and I'm sure it is, though it would've been sweet to have seen some other player's collaborate their styles along side him. Hopefully this will someday be compared to Sklansky on Razz and will return in a longer book of theory by this poker great!

A spotted Dog and a new game of poker

Apparently a badugi is a spotted dog as well one of the newer forms of draw poker. Barry as always emphasizes basing your play on your opponents tendencies. For example he describes drawing to an A27 versus a an early pat hand(and explains how early pats are often weaker) but throws the 7 versus strong 3 card hands and versus loose 3 card hands. The style of the chapter is concise and well written, with the exception of a few strange voices like uses of we versus you or I thrown in. He also asks and answers the core questions like what is a good hand worth? How often am I dealt a badugi?

Is it worthwhile to generate a maniac image to create a `market' for getting calls with 3 card incompletes? Barry seems to think so and describes plays he uses in the game to generate and profit with it.

Last of note for me was his description of a lowball card squeezing play for bluffing which allows him to see the rank of the card and not its suit. If it's the rank he needs he uses it to randomize a bluff. I've never played badugi live(just triple draw) but an interesting inclusion in the next edition(or a larger triple draw book) could be a video of the lowball squeeze.

Overall this is a good addition to any mixed game players library and well worth the price of admission. I give it 4 out 5 stars for now. It's concise and well thought out. Could there more? Yes but this is a good starter, just what is needed for getting to know a new game.

Useful, clean, but missing simulations

You can't fault Barry G for being a math guy, not a computer science guy. His analysis is great. But it's limited to what you can compute with a few probability sums. The strategy he suggests is way too tight. Tighter than Barry himself would play, and tighter than anyone plays in real life. But it's a great guide. Short and well written. If my opponents knew even this much, I'd be in trouble.

best book to learn measure theory from

this is a great, clearly written book that excels as a book to learn analysis from. the book takes a ground up approach, starting with only the positive real line and generalizing from there. being presented in the most simple context where all the abstraction is stripped away, the essence of the arguments is laid bare and thus the proofs are as understandable as possible. then, once the arguments are made and the intuition is in place, the book proceeds to generalize the results to more abstract circumstances. thus making the motivation for using more powerful tools clear.

this style can be compared to that of rudin's classic book, which is largely a disaster to learn out of. for instance, rudin's book oscillates between C and R for whatever gives the most slick, but often least insightful proof. this is fine, and even enjoyable once you understand the subject, but is terrible to learn from for most people. there isn't a better book to learn measure theory and integration out of than this book

Not the best book on the subject

The book in fact is well written. But in my opinion this is not the best book of the area. Kolmogorov, Fomin's book is better (Rudin's books as well). Lieb and Loss' book (Analysis) of AMS series is also better than this one.
The book is well organized but since it's a bit old book, the notations are kind of heavy.
BTW the quality of the material of the book is not the best. It starts to dived in parts just even after a week one uses it.
