The Birth of Lucy Brown

"You're a Winner Charlie Brown" is a selection of Peanuts cartoons from 1959-1960. If you like Pigpen, this would be a good one to read, as he appears in quite a few places. You even see him clean in one strip! There's a lot of Linus too. We see him talking though his short lived dream of being a doctor, wondering if he needs to shave, hurling rocks in a vacant lot to let out his emotions. Plus there's Charlie Brown attempting to fly a kite, which you can see from the cover.

Though you don't actually see her in this book, a great deal of this book involves the birth of and thoughts about baby Sally Brown. Chocolate cigar are handed out. Charlie Brown wants to dress her in a jumpsuit similar to his signature zig-zag shirt, and worries about his sis. Snoopy gets dressed up as a baby. Lucy wishes she had a sister and upsets Linus, who has one of the most heartbreaking faces I've seen in Peanuts when they make up again.

Schultz would continue to develop the style of his characters, though I admire the way they are drawn here. They're cute, but aren't "stereotyped in shape" at this stage, if you know what I mean.

Though there are some funny strips, and the birth of Sally is interesting in the scheme of all things Peanuts, it isn't the funniest of the Peanuts series I have read. My favorite Peanuts moments are the silly ones, and though there are silly moments here, they are few. Just a matter of taste. A good read for a rainy day.

More tales of the Little Red Haired Girl

This book was geared more twords children since it was baised off of a TV cartoon, but any Snoopy fan can enjoy it. The charming illistrations are not in comic strip style but instead take up pages, a plus in my oppinion. This is the story of the ongoing trials of Charlie Brown and his unrequitted love for the little red haired girl...a classic peanuts senario if there ever was one!

Is there anyone who doesn't have fond memories of the last day of school? That may be why the TV special "You're in Love, Charlie Brown" was my favorite of the Peanuts cartoons. Unfortunately, it is not repeated with the same regularity as the Christmas and Halloween shows, and I was pleased to find it in book form. The story involves Charlie Brown's last-ditch efforts to meet the little red-haired girl before school closes for the summer. Of course, he fails, but the story ends on a happy note. I particularly liked the spring pictures with trees in bloom, lawns covered with flowers, and robin's-egg-blue skies. I only wish there were more outdoor scenes in the book, as there were in the TV show. But it's still a lovely book to look at and a charming story, and I think children of all ages will enjoy it.

It was the first such catechism written for Catholics in North America, replacing a translation of Bellarmine's Small Catechism. In response to criticisms, various editions include annotations or other modifications. The Baltimore Catechism remained in use in nearly all Catholic schools until many moved away from catechism-based education, though it is still used up to this day in some. In the nineteenth century, repeated efforts had been made in the United States towards an arrangement by which a uniform textbook of Christian Doctrine might be used by all Catholics. As early as 1829, the bishops assembled in the First Provincial Council of Baltimore, Maryland decreed: "A catechism shall be written which is better adapted to the circumstances of this Province; it shall give the Christian Doctrine as explained in Cardinal Bellarmine's Catechism (1597), and when approved by the Holy See, it shall be published for the common use of Catholics" (Decr. xxxiii). The clause recommending Bellarmine's Catechism as a model was added at the special request of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. It may be mentioned here that Bellarmine's "Small Catechism," Italian text with English translation, was published at Boston, in 1853. The wish of the bishops was not carried out, and the First and Second Plenary Councils of Baltimore (1852 and 1866) repeated the decree of 1829. In the Third Plenary Council (1884) many bishops were in favor of a "revised" edition of a 1775 catechism by Irish Archbishop Butler, but finally the matter was given into the hands of a committee of six bishops. At last, in 1885, was issued "A Catechism of Christian Doctrine, Prepared and Enjoined by Order of the Third Council of Baltimore." Although the council had desired a catechism "perfect in every respect" (Acta et Decr., p. 219), theologians and teachers criticized several points (Nilles, "Commentaria", II, 265, 188). Soon various editions came forth with additions of word-meanings, explanatory notes, some even with different Arrangements, so that soon there was a considerable diversity in the books that go by the name of Baltimore Catechism. The Baltimore Catechism became the standard text for Catholic education in the United States

probably meant for 3-4 year olds.

I felt this book was easier than I hoped it would be. I originally bought it for my 1st grader to see roughly how he might do when GATE tested this year. When he blew through it, I gave it to my 4 year old who also completed it easily by himself. It was a bit expensive so I was hoping that there would be challenges that we could discuss and work through together. However, I give it 5 stars anyway because the boys enjoyed it and it kept their attention. If you think your child is developing for the magnet program, I would recommend this book for 3-4 year olds.

I and my son really like the this book

I and my son really like the this book. I am trying to help my 4 year old son get ready for his g&t exam. I like the fact that the questions in here to make him think. We have been doing section by section. It's colorful and he enjoys doing it. It is so important to get him familiar with questions. I think that helps a lot. I also bought the NNAT book from this publisher. I would recommend this.

Incredibly expensive for what you get...I paid about $25. My 4 year old loved the questions but also said that these questions were not like the ones she had on the actual g&t test.

Cabrera is the best!

If your looking for a book on the afro-cuban religions, this is possibly the best one written. Cuban anthropologist Lydia Cabrera has written one of the best books on the subject. She discusses the myths, rituals and history of the religions derived from the congo and from the yoruba people who were brought as slaves into Cuba. In addition, Cabrera's text has a mamomth dictionary of various herbs, fruits, and vegetables, explaining who their spiritual owner is in addition to what the item can be used for. Cabrera also discusses the secret society of the Nanigos. It's a shame that this text has yet to be translated into English as it deserves to have a wider audience. Nonetheless, if you can read in spanish and are interested in this subject, this is definately a book to buy!

Lydia's books are all very nice when it comes to the explanation of things and their history.

As a notice to the readers of Afro-Cuban Religion books;

Take the readings only as theory since the practice varies greatly amongst the branches of the religions. You have to be iniciated in, Palo, Santo, Ifa, or Abakua to learn the real secrets, so don't expect to read them on a book. Some of the authors present you with too much information, like actual rituals and the making of talismans...Don't do it, as it is disrespectful to the dieties, and to the practioners, not to mentention the bad consecuences which your curiosity might bring upon you.

So read on for educational purposes and don't allow your curiosity to get you in trouble :) .

I also recomend any of the books by Natalia Bol�var Ar�stegui, an excellent writer in the field and having met her in person I can tell you that she's very dedicated.
