Heartz conducts a tour of musical Vienna during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa that involves meeting, besides the principals--Haydn and Mozart--the court composers and musicians who influenced them. To celebrate the name days of the members of the royal court and to otherwise entertain, Wagenseil (trailblazer for Haydn), Ditters, Salieri, and Gluck all composed symphonies, concerti, chamber music, theater works, operas, oratorios, and incidental music for plays. Heartz offers short biographies of these court composers and, sprinkling the text with examples from the period's major musical works, delineates the progress of musical form and style upon which Haydn and Mozart built. The survey peaks with Haydn, first in Vienna, then at Esterha{�}za, advancing the musical art of his predecessors, and ends with Mozart, who revered Haydn's compositions. I loved this book.
Totally entertaining.
I had not previously know where the expression, "Shank's Mare" originated.
A fun read. Hard to put it down.

It's OK.

I have only just started reading this book and I'm haveing alot of trouble finding the houmor in the book. And also I can't really tell what is going on in the story. The plot seems to be choppy and I can't get a mental picture as to what is going on half the time. But I can not bash the book untill I'm done reading it. I hope things start to smooth out the more I read it and get a feel for the style of the book.

Good silly fun

This book is over 200 years old and still popular. There's a good reason for that.

It captures all that people love about slapstick, and doesn't worry about toning it down for the kids. The two heros drift from town to town, bordello to bordello, and bar to bar. They're petty grifters, always trying to pull another meager scam, and always getting the worst of it in the end.

There's no real plot here, just a sequence of vignettes. They're all like enough in kind to create a rhythm, but different enough to stay entertaining. Lots of the humor is low - potty humor, not restricted just to human waste. As in some britcoms, our heroes suddenly appear in their underwear time and again - or out of it, or next to it, or looking up into a tree at it. The real fun is in their silly pranks and exaggerations, always found out in ways that make them look like total twits.

Ikku Jippensha's work is still a good read, even today. Sometimes, though, English doesn't capture the flavor of the original. The translator just shouldn't have bothered with some of the puns, and a few turns of phrase probably sounded better back when this was translated. End-notes are scanty, and there appears to be a systematic error in page number references towards the end of the notes.

None of that really interferes with a good read. Enjoy the prat-falls as much as the original readers did, 200 years ago and in Japan.

John Garrick is an attorney of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Australia. He is author and co-editor publications including Law, Wealth and Power in China: Commercial Law Reforms in Context (Routledge 2014) and Law and Policy for China’s Market Socialism (Routledge 2015).

Yan Chang Bennett is a lawyer and Manager for the Center on Contemporary China at Princeton University. From 2009-2015 she was the Assistant Director for the Princeton-Harvard China and the World Program. Before coming to Princeton, she was a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State having served as Vice Consul in China.

Good reference!

Very helpful as a quick reference for only the "need to know" information. Does not explain or embellish the disease process.

I took off one star because I feel like they left a lot of disease processes out and when you are trying to look up a disease process, the way they categorize in the index is not always intuitive so I find myself going "atalectasis?" No. "Lung?" No. Um... ???

I WISH I had this in nursing school, I didn't realize there was a clinical handbook! This has been a lifesaver for my first job in acute care out of school. Clear, comprehensive and compelling, I will always carry this on me! This, and the mama M/S book, were the only books I loved in my BSN program. I sold everything else, these are excellent, high quality reference books that will make you a better nurse.

The plays now appear separately, in soft covers, at a price which makes them especially suitable for University use. The apparatus criticus records some of the many meritorious suggestions from the past, which Dr. van Paassen's collection has brought to light. The text itself has been drafted on more adventurous principles than before, to offer something smoother and more readable for the less advanced students, and something more provocative of thought for their mentors, in the belief that lively disagreement, if disagreement is called for, is more valuable than unquestioning acquiescence.

excellent but no substitute for Jebb

This is an excellent text--but I find the play much more difficult than the Antigone and Jebb's notes are more extensive. One critic notes that these difficulties arise from the fact that in the Oedipus--the characters are "in the dark" and therefore the irony of certain tricky syntactical units or puns or even secondary meanings of words is essential to Sophocles' great work. In the Antigone I found these problems less daunting precisely because all the characters are aware of their actions and consequences--thus the linguistic ironies of the Oedipus are less necessary.
Dawe has done a splendid job but I believe that the notes in Sir Richard Jebbs edition are (for me at least) essential. While I am not really competent to judge the difficulties of establishing a "authoritative" text--I believe no one has surpassed Jebb's monumental achievement.

It's good, but definately kind of disturbing. Those Greeks, what to do, wht to do.
If you like freaky stories, you'll love this. It's got everything, murder, incest, magic, and self mutilation.

Review of Dawe's Oedipus Rex

A lot of the reviews for this page note how OT is a 'great tragedy' and should be 'read by everyone in college.' I'm not sure if Amazon has been pooling reviews from other (English?) editions of the text, but this is a commentary on the Cambridge edition of the Greek text produced by Dawe.

The introduction is a little underwhelming, and bounces between the historical situation of the play and our modern (mis)interpretation of its content, mediated by Freud and so forth. I would have appreciated more structure, and a more straightforward introduction, which is instead more of an introductory essay on how to read the play.

The endnotes the great. No problems there.

Ugh. Well, I guess the title worked. ...

Ugh. Well, I guess the title worked. I picked it and read it because of the title and blurb, ooh, a lesbian version of a really sexy book, let me try it. I kept waiting for it to pick up and get interesting or sexy or anything, but it never happened. The plot was thin, the characters were flat and the sex wasn't hot. And why was it called fifty shades, when BDSM was such a major part of that series, and only a sidebar in this one? Way to cash in on someone else's success.

Piggybacking at best

I received a free copy of 50 Shades Of Pink by KT Grant on Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my review and I am not required to give a positive review. The opinions are expressed are my own.
I am a huge fan of the Fifty Shades Of Grey series so I was looking forward to reading something similar and getting that same sort of vibe. With that said, this book just lacks a richness and sort of finesse in the way the story is told plus it could use some editing. The main characters name is Lindsay Pinke which is pronounced Pink, the e is silent. Lindsay is naive in a bad way. Her boss at Virago Magazine sends to do an interview with Victoria Nox for an upcoming article. When Lindsay arrives at the interview she is completely flustered and intimidated by Nox. Nox freely admits that she did a background check on her and that freaks Lindsay out. Lindsay bolts from Nox's office. It actually says "I didn’t run but I bolted down the hall and toward the door that would lead me to freedom." She was so disturbed by the interview that she goes home, climbs in bed and refuses to answer her phone or talk to anyone. I'm a sucker for kink, romance, drama and stupidity to a certain point but this story is just bad.

Great read! Wish it didn't end so soon! Till next time!

I was a bit skeptical about this book that I received from NetGalley to give an honest review. All in all though I thoroughly enjoyed it. Had to overlook the grammatical errors but, if you can I guess turn your cheek to it, you'll be fine. I have to say though some parts I was wanting, and needing more in depth look into Victoria's past or I guess explanations about her ex Laci. I'm a girl who likes to know why, what, when, and where. I was biting at the bit when I started to notice that the pages were slimming down and I really didn't want it to end especially since I wanted to know what the big "deal" was between Victoria and Ben. I hope I don't have to wait too long for the sequel. Back to practicing the art of patience.
