Good read, few inconsistencies

I really enjoyed the second book of A Lady out of Time with the back-to-the-past time travel series.
Helen was left for dead after the pas events while she was actually rescued by her friend Mary and is now off to a new mission, rescuing the Prince of Wales and trying to do so while avoiding .... While Edward is tormented by Helen's death and going back to his mundane life.
There were few inconsistencies though, mainly being:
(SPOILER ALER)
- The serum to fix the bleeding due to time travel. How can it exist when there's no communication possible between the past and the present? Even if 10 persons of the German side managed to time travel and among them scientists, science and technology wouldn't be advanced enough in those times to allow any creation of a serum that would counter the effects of time travelling> And we know that they couldn't have brought with them any equipment
- Jonathon Turner, the Lieutenant sent from their side. Well, it seems that none of the girls knew him before so why the hell would they trust him? It does't make sense to send someone they didn't know when bing in such a perilous mission
- At the end, when Edward chooses Helen over his fiancee. Ok I saw that coming obviously but even if he follows the list of things he was supposed to do in his life, the fact that he didn't marry Lady Katherine means that we wouldn't have access to her vast fortune so how would he spend that money in research and development.....
- All the political struggle with the Nazi somehow went down the gutter, to me this is unfinished business

But otherwise, excellent read, I like Ms. Hanson's writing style, it's witty and funny.
Now I'll be waiting for Bewitching the Werewolf novella 2 (this one is truly excellent, check it out!)!!!

Interesting approach to time travel romance

I have to admit that I absolutely loved the books! So it a time travel duo this being the second but (in my opinion) should really just be one book. I can appreciate Hanson’s creativity and originality because this is a new approach to time travel romances. That being said, the book has flaws, there are a lot of typos. Also the books are very short, I think instead of being two, it should just be one longer book with different parts. Like Part 1 and Part 2. Both were excellent for me but I wish the characters were a little more fleshed out, I wish some scenes were extended, I wish there were scenes for some parts that were mentioned but not seen. I wanted Hanson to show what a badass heroine Helen was and I didn’t get that. Like I didn’t see anything particularly special since she was a soldier, so I would have liked to see that. Also I felt the ending was rather abrupt.

Loved it...

I loved the first book, but it ended in a sort of cliffhanger and I could not wait for next story. It was well worth the wait. Excellent story, imaginative, great characters, action, romance and excitement. I got the feeling it was the end and I am OK with that, but I would be happy if it continued. I highly recommend both books in the Helen Foster series.

My new favorite resource for natural medicine!

This is the ideal book for those who want a quick and practical guide to natural health and healing.
Other books on natural healing I've read have been encyclopedic, taking far too much time and effort to get to the point. By the time I've read all my options, I'd feel overwhelmed.
However this book cuts right to the chase. You can look up your condition and have a couple of the best options just like that. The aliments presented in this book consist of suggestions for a quick relief, and a few more for long-term maintenance.
I have a feeling that this book is going to become a go-to manual for me. Very useful!

Great tips on natural home remedies!

This book is a little on the short side- but still worth reading. Who says you need a prescription to every problem? Sometimes, a home remedy is all you need to feel better in a pinch. With this book, I learnt how to relieve migraines, clear my skin, and sleep better with these natural remedies. This is better than using chemicals on your body, I mean who knows what they can do?

I believe the best answers come from nature itself, with so many possible side effects coming from traditional drugs and remedies. This book is loaded with some great information. I always wanted to follow a healthy diet but given my tough work schedule, my diet has been limited to consuming junk food. Well, this book explained the type of foods a person would need to be consuming and provided some simple recipes for me to prepare. I found this book very resourceful and will use it for years to come.

Great Manual, don't pay for it.

Excellent for self study or a formal course backbone; I plan to follow it with the thermal and vibe sequels

I am a mechanical design engineer, PE, and have been mainly self taught in CAD using 3rd party manuals since the early 90's on autocad, pro/e (since 1993) and lately Solidworks. I am now diving into the simulation package for Solidworks as it has, in my opinion, finally gained the power and stability to be a potential alternative for flotherm and ANSYS (my previous preferred tools) as CFD and FEA analytical tools. I have found this book to be extremely well written, with great depth, accuracy and user friendliness; when I run a problem from the book the solution teaches methodology, works (without having to dig through typos, errors or crashes), and occasionally touches on theory without diving into the linear algebra basis for FEA that is frankly only interesting to FEA programmers or hard core math nuts. A definite 5 star tutorial that is suitable for self study. I am admittedly only ~ 2/3 of the way through so there might be an example problem that needs tweaking left to find, but so far so great. 10 points, 5 stars, A+, whatever..

Terrible book. It skips so many steps. Constant, constant skipping. I'll read three pages, confused, only to go back and realize I was supposed to do a step the book does not mention. Too bad this review doesn't matter, because you have to buy this book anyway!

About the Author

Nicola Femia is a full professor of electrotechnics at the University of Salerno, where he teaches circuit theory and power electronics and leads the Power Electronics and Renewable Sources Laboratory. He has been responsible for research and education projects in collaboration with several industries, including Magnetek, National Semiconductor, STMicroelectronics, PowerOne, and Texas Instruments. He is co-author of more than 140 scientific papers published in international journals and in the proceedings of international conferences. He is co-author of five patents regarding control techniques and power converters for photovoltaic applications.

Giovanni Petrone is an assistant professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Salerno, where he teaches electrotechnics and power electronic circuits for renewable energy sources. He is involved in several research projects with international companies and institutions and has also assumed responsibility for some Italian research projects supported by public funds. He is co-author of five patents and several scientific papers published in international journals and in the proceedings of international symposia.

Giovanni Spagnuolo is an associate professor of electrical engineering at the University of Salerno. He is the project leader of two European projects Leonardo Da Vinci and FP7 and one PRIN 2008 project financed by the Italian Ministry of University and of Scientific and Technological Research (MURST), and he is the coordinator of research contracts financed by National Semiconductors Corporation, Matrix S.r.l., and Bitron Industrie S.p.A. He is co-author of six patents and the author or co-author of more than 140 papers published in international journals and in the proceedings of international conferences. Massimo Vitelli is a full professor in the Department of Industrial and Information Engineering at the Second University of Naples, where he teaches electrotechnics and power electronics. Too Short

I really wanted to like Miller's commentary, particularly because it was the only one recommended by Stuart and Fee in their book How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth: Fourth Edition or How to Read the Bible Book by Book: A Guided Tour.

Let me preface by saying that I have nothing against his Premillenial position per se. Everyone has to have a position. It is just the fact that I was not convinced by his evidence that his position was reasonable. What I found is that, while his book was well researched, the discussion needed to be meatier. The reason was two-fold. First, Miller seems to assume that the audience already has familiarity with eschatological positions, particularly the Premillenial position. For instance, after establishing why he has chosen to approach Daniel in this way, he often makes statements about the anti-Christ without explaining his reasoning. As a result, I had little evidence or argumentation to help me buy into his interpretation. Secondly, he regularly comes to conclusions without giving clear reasoning. This makes it hard to follow.

I would also have liked to have seen him exegete the text from the point of view of when it was written rather than from the point of view of fulfilled prophecy. What I mean is that he often suggests an interpretation of a passage based on how it was fulfilled rather than based on the Hebrew text. This seems like special pleading. It should be established first of all the various possible understandings of the Hebrew text and then one can suggest that a particular interpretation is to be favored based on its correspondence with fulfillment. He also uses the term anti-Christ and Christ in places where it would seem less anachronistic to refer to things from the perspective of Daniel's text (e.g. Messiah, abomination that causes desolation). This is not because I disagree with Miller's interpretation on these points, but because we are trying to listen to the text as written: "let the text speak for itself."

Perhaps it is because of his eschatological perspective, but I was disappointed that he characterized chapter 7 as the focal point of the book of Daniel. It seems to me that chapters 1-6 are not "preparatory" for the rest of the book, but central in their own way. The call to perseverance through tough times and to faithfulness in persecution as well as trust in God's plan is the thread that seems to tie the two halves of Daniel together and, in my opinion, this thesis should be seen as central - especially since there is so much disagreement over chapters 7-12. But for Miller it is the prophecy of the end times that is the most important aspect of the book - and particularly in a Premillenial way.

An example of assertion without evidence was his limiting the genre of Daniel to "Canonical Apocalyptic". He gave no good reasons or evidence why non-canonical apocalyptic had no bearing on the understanding of the genre. In my experience non-canonical literature is extremely helpful in interpreting canonical literature.

Finally, Miller seemed to confuse exegesis and interpretation. This may be to the prophetic nature of chapters 7-12. In 1-6 he does a good job because he uses historical evidence to help with exegesis. But in 7-12 he uses future history to do the exegesis. This is clearly interpretation (whether correct or not). The problem with claiming he is doing exegesis when he is doing interpretation is that one can establish exegetical options, but interpretation and application must be argued separately and afterwards. One sounds much more authoritative and objective using the word exegesis, when one is trying to bolster one's interpretation. This can be misleading.

On non-controversial parts, his commentary was good. When addressing controversial topics, his answers were occasionally clearly reasoned, but often just asserted.

Affirmed well the sovereignty of God without assuming that sovereignty and power forces a deterministic view of the world. Gave real room for human decision-making and freedom.

On many issues is not dogmatic as others are.

RECOMMENDATION
The background information was either hard to absorb or lacking. In contrast, John Lennox's book on Against the Flow: The Inspiration of Daniel in an Age of Relativism sets the stage vividly and with a lot more detail than Miller. More hermeneutical application would have been helpful, another thing which John Lennox does in his book.

Deserves to be read

In 1975 I read a commentary on Daniel. It was my first major reading of a commentary. I have been reading commentaries for fun (and work) ever since. My wife and I recently translated the Aramaic portions (six chapters) of Daniel. I found myself reading through the rest of Daniel written in Hebrew. This led to pulling off the shelf, John Goldingay's commentary and purchasing J.J.Collin's commentary, for further study. These two are the most raved about commentaries in the last 20 years. Goldingay is a master of the literary form and structure of each chapter/section of Daniel, and brings to the reader a vast array of other ancient sources. Surprisingly Goldingay, an evangelical, holds to a late date for the book. While his commentary has much to teach us, at times I found the exegetical comments on the verses a bit slim.

What Goldingay misses in the exegetical sections, Collins gives in abundance over any commentary of recent time. Montgomery's 1927 commentary on Daniel is the foundational work of the original languages and still worthy getting if you can find it. As for Collins he gives a detailed work on Hebrew and Aramaic words and for those interested both translation and commentary on sections of the Greek version of Daniel. He closes out the book with translation and commentary on the extra biblical Bel and the Dragon and Susanna stories. Adding to this a lengthy introduction including the history of the interpretation of Daniel makes Collins the premier work on Daniel.

The main thing I found missing in both of these exceptional commentaries is the lack of interaction with - a) scholars who still hold to an early date and - b) interpretations that have dominated the landscape for centuries. I wondered if there was any recent work that might give at least some balance to the discussion. From reading reviews I found a name unknown to me in Stephen Miller who I hoped might give some balance. His short introduction (only 30 some pages) grabbed me immediately. In Miller's work one will find a rich compendium of the best commentaries. This alone makes it a plus for a beginner. One may not agree with his all his conservative interpretations and will have to smile at his brief Sunday school kinds of sentences inserted for our personal application. Overlooking these it is well worth the buy and read. It has become one of my favorite commentaries. I rarely write reviews on books but this one deserves to be read.
