About the Author

Sandra P. Rosenblum has lectured widely on performance practices at universities, schools of music, and both national and international conferences. The author of numerous journal articles and of editions of sonatas by Scarlatti and Clementi, Ms. Rosenblum holds degrees from Wellesley College and Harvard University. She has been the recipient of fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the Radcliffe Institute. Her present research is on the music of Chopin.

Exactly what I've been searching for long long long time!

As a piano instructor, I thought that C.P.E.Bach's The True Art of Playing Keyboard Instruments should be the comprehensive companion on performance practice, but found it is a little bit old in some ways. Then one of my friends who is on piano faculty at the Michigan University in An Arbor recommended this book to me. I believe this book is the exact guide to me when talking about performance practice on mordern piano especially in stylistic interpretation on general issues, such as how to deal with small slurs in different classical composers, different expression marks, etc. Great in many ways.

una fabula sobre la humanidad

El Se�or de las Moscas William Golding La isla desierta, el segundo comienzo de la humanidad, la juventud e inexperiencia de sus ocupantes, la relajaci�n de los controles morales y la gradual ca�da de sus habitantes en la inercia y la anarqu�a, estos son los elementos que encontramos en el se�or de las moscas. Me pregunto que seria de mi si estuviese en esa situaci�n, caer�a en la anarqu�a o tratar�a e imitar la decadente sociedad de la que vengo? Aunque estoy de acuerdo con el autor en muchas cosas, no estoy de acuerdo con la premisa de que el mal es innato y que la supresi�n de los controles provoque caos. Quiz�s sea yo el menos indicado para se�alar esto y solo sea un simple so�ador, ya que en mis a�os de colegio fui un Piggy cualquiera, blanco de las burlas y las mofas de los m�s astutos aunque menos intelectuales que yo. Y despu�s en mi vida adulta como profesor he visto que el egocentrismo de los ni�os los lleva a veces a ser crueles con sus compa�eros. Pero aun me resisto a creer, deseo firmemente demostrar que ese proceso puede revertirse, aunque veo que por lo visto en los �ltimos tiempos la violencia infantil en las escuelas por parte de ni�os ha aumentado bastante. La novela sin embargo trata el punto de vista del autor que supo expresar sus pensamientos magistralmente, aunque debo decir que las descripciones de la selva me resultaron cansonas. Pero eso ya es culpa m�a, pues nunca he sido muy adepto a las descripciones de paisajes, siendo atra�do enormemente en cambio por los aspectos psicol�gicos de las obras...... Descripci�n de la obra Esta obra de William Golding es una f�bula al estilo ingles ( parece ser que a los ingleses les encanta escribir este tipo de f�bula moralista de mundos en decadencia. Solo tenemos que acordarnos de Un Mundo Feliz, 1984, Hacienda de Animales y otras mas, todas sobre mundos o sociedades en su ocaso o dominados por seres autoritarios) en que un grupo de PRE-adolescentes y ni�os se ve atrapado en una isla desierta . Los personajes principales de la obra reflejan cada uno una condici�n distinta del ser humano. Amazing Series

I really enjoyed this book, it really started slow. I started getting into it with Riley and Ariela's first scene together.
I really enjoyed seeing all the Eastbrooke kids in the future. Seeing how their doing, their lives. Everything. I love reading things like that. They all had great chemistry together. Its amazing how people can change so much in 10 years.
Although I didn't like this as much as the first 7. It was still reallly good. I really liked the stalking part of the first 7 it made the books much better. But I am definately going to keep reading. Because I still LOVE all the characters. I cant wait to see where they go next.
My heart did break over a couple of people in the future. Such sad ending for a couple people. But overall I really enjoyed this. Still a wonderful story.

Dull

This is the continuation of a series about rich high school students -- now they all work at the same film company (where it seems like little work is being done) or are closely associated with it in some capacity. They still hang out and relate to each other as if they were sixteen -- nobody new enters the clique and hardly anybody ever leaves. This leads to silly scenes where they awkwardly recount events from ten years ago as if they just happened. Although I don't know -- if I never made new friends after the age of sixteen, I might have also found it hard to retire teenage drama.

The author's fascination with the high school lives of the characters is endless to the point of implausibility. I found it hard to swallow that their adolescent drama was interesting enough to inspire not one, but THREE blockbuster films, but this is what we are asked to believe.

Fans of the original series may find this an enjoyable continuation. The rest of us may find the drama over-wrought and slightly dull (two friends want to sleep with the same actress, that sort of thing) and the characters both ridiculous and indistinguishable apart from their trendy names.

An excuse to live in Keatyn's crazy world a little bit longer…

I can best describe the Keatyn Chronicles as a masterfully addictive conundrum. A guilty pleasure. An incessant drama that got under my skin imprinting me with frustration, exasperation, and expectation. I found myself enjoying a world of adolescent, over-the-top drama with ubiquitous emotions. I loved every second of it. I was so excited to read Captive Films: Season One, giving me an excuse to live in Keatyn's crazy world a little bit longer. However, I was terrified. I loved how Keatyn's story ended. I had closure, a sense of completion. Did I need more? DId I want more? What if Captive Films unclosed my closure?

Like the very conundrum that makes the Keatyn Chronicles so fascinating, my emotions surrounding this new edition were a bit conflicting; conflicting with a tad of indifference. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the more, but the moreness took a while to get use to. If you go into this series with the expectation of a Keatyn Chronicles sequel, you will be disappointed, because this is something different; totally different. It took me about three episodes to get use to the different, and then I became wrapped up in it. Fans of the series will love getting to experience their favorite characters, but the experience is something new and very far from what we've come to associate this series with. Not a bad different, but something you need to be prepared for.

If you're expecting a novel then this isn't it. It's exactly what the description says, these are episodes. This requires a style of writing that's an evolution of what you might be use to.

I chose not to read season one an episode at a time. Instead, I read the entire series straight through, in one sitting, it was addictive. But just like a movie is created in a way that's different from a TV series, this is done in a way that's different from a novel.

It was tough to not want to compare this to the original KC series, it's human nature. In fact, I failed, but doing that held me back in loving this as much as I hoped. It was entertaining and I was thrilled to get more, but I think I entered with an altered expectation making an impossibly out of meeting them.

Thinking about Captive Films as more of a spinoff series (which technically it is) will enhance the overall experience. I'm glad I had the opportunity to read more and I hope there's a season two!

Soon they were gathering and burying the dead, in an age-old custom of truces. But as the power of Christmas grew among them, they broke bread, exchanged addresses and letters and expressed deep admiration for one another. When angry superiors ordered them to recommence the shooting, many men aimed harmlessly high overhead.Sometimes the greatest beauty emerges from deep tragedy. History is peppered with oddments and ironies, and one of the strangest is this. A few days before the first Christmas of that long bloodletting then called the Great War, hundreds of thousands of cold, trench-bound combatants put aside their arms and, in defiance of their orders, tacitly agreed to stop the killing in honor of the holiday.

That informal truce began with small acts: here opposing Scottish and German troops would toss newspapers, ration tins, and friendly remarks across the lines; there ambulance parties, clearing the dead from the barbwire hell of no man's land, would stop to share cigarettes and handshakes. Soon it spread, so that by Christmas Eve the armies of France, England, and Germany were serenading each other with Christmas carols and sentimental ballads and denouncing the conflict with cries of "Á bas la guerre!" and "Nie wieder Krieg!" The truce was, writes Stanley Weintraub, a remarkable episode, and, though "dismissed in official histories as an aberration of no consequence," it was so compelling that many who observed it wrote in near-disbelief to their families and hometown newspapers to report the extraordinary event.

In the end, writes Weintraub, the truce ended with a few stray bullets that escalated into total war, and that would fill the air for just shy of four more Christmases to come; further, isolated attempts at informal peacemaking would fail. But what, Weintraub wonders at the close of this inspired study, would have happened if the soldiers on both sides had refused to take up arms again? Popular historian Weintraub (MacArthur's War, etc.), emeritus professor of arts and humanities at Penn State, tackles a sober subject from WWI, when amid the millions of casualties in the obscene carnage of trench war, a mutual agreement arose for a cease-fire at Christmastime of the first year of conflict. Drawing from secondary sources as well as much archival research in a variety of languages, Weintraub has compiled a brief, anecdotal account that reveals his skill as a researcher and deftness as a narrator in chapters like "An Outbreak of Peace," "Our Friends, the Enemy" and "How It Ended." There are lively anecdotes, contemporary doggerel and some extraneous asides such as that "a Chinese fourth century B.C. military text mentions a primitive form of football." While succinctly conveying the mood and stakes of this unprecedented display of mutual trust during war, Weintraub's short book could help draw Malcolm Brown and Shirley Seaton's magisterial Christmas Truce back into print. In the meantime, and just in time for the holidays, we have this offering from one of our most patient chroniclers.

Despite the impact of Weintraub's storytelling and documentation, some readers may be stymied by occasionally untranslated German or confused by his interweaving of fictional accounts of the event. The "Christmas Truce" of World War I Explained in Detail Go FOR IT

It is an awesome book that details the "Christmas Truce" and the before and after. It honestly helps you understand better World War I and how indeed Generals who basically knew nothing about war kept this war going with all the carnage and unnecessary deaths and maiming. I had always loved the John McCutcheon song, and this book literally explains WWI in such a succinct way. And, particularly how just a short distance behind the lines, life kind of just went on. A very very sobering and good read.

Enemies are human

It was the story of Godly men on both sides. It showed the humanity in war and the absolute lack of it in the fighting. It showed the big picture to be silly little men keeping their jobs and doing so inefficiently. There was no good reason for the war besides the pride of men at the top, the grandsons of Victoria. I know that there were hundreds near the top in every country who wanted the war but it cannot explain why the death of millions had to happen.
This is the best war production since Enemies are human by Reinhold Pabel.

A Tale of Many Tales

Interesting information about the fabled event, but wearies the reader with the many accounts.Seems like more of a research paper or defense of the "happening" being a real one than an actual story (tale) of an event. We've all heard an account of this in the past, and we still don't know just how much is true and how much is rumor, imagination, or exaggeration. But a nice thought nonetheless.

The Roman Empire was one of the greatest empires of the ancient world. Expanding and maintaining this empire required military might. Although only occupied for a short period, a number of camp sites have survived the ravages of time to tell us something of the movements and activities of the Roman army in provinces around the empire.

Temporary Roman camp sites have now been recorded the length and breadth of the Roman Empire, but the area with the largest number of recognized camps is that of the island of Britain, with nearly 500 now known.

This book commences with a brief general overview of the Roman conquest of Britain and an explanation of what the Roman camps were used for, with a look at layout, orientation and holding capacity. The second half of the book focuses on the archaeology of Roman camps in Britain, with an explanation of how we know what we know, and looking at the reuse and survival of these structures. The author then considers the relatively recent extensive excavations at Kintore in Aberdeenshire and looks at the distribution of camps and how our archaeological understanding can help interpret their chronology and context.

About the Author
Dr Rebecca H. Jones is an archaeologist at RCAHMS with a long-standing interest in the Roman army and Roman frontiers. She is a graduate of the Universities of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Glasgow, and has also worked for the University of Aberystwyth. Her PhD was on Roman camps in Scotland and she co-authored the volume on Roman Camps in Wales (with Dr J. L. Davies, University of Aberystwyth).
