A winner of the Ted Hughes Award and a praised creator of spoken-word performances, Tempest has written a series of poems inspired by the myth of Tiresias. When Zeus and his wife, Hera, fought about who enjoyed sex the most—men or women—Tiresias, who had been both, was summoned and lost his sight in the tumult. The slim book is divided into four sections: "Childhood," "Womanhood," "Manhood," and "Blind Prophet." The long opening poem tells the story of Tiresias, 15, walking through woods and seeing two copulating snakes. He strikes them with a stick and falls, waking up female. Tiresias adjusts to the switch, finds love, but changes back to a man after several years. After he is blinded, he becomes a prophet. "Childhood" has several lively poems that teens should especially enjoy. The descriptions in "School" will ring true for many young people: "We wander into school, happy children;/kind and bright and interested in things./We don't yet know the horrors of the building./The hatred it will teach. The boredom it will bring." In the "Womanhood" poems, the woman Tiresias is described: "The boy in her is strong some days/And calls out for a girl to touch." "Manhood" also continues the mythic tale; the angry poems in the final section, "Blind Prophet," may suit the mood of some young adults. About the Author
Kate Tempest grew up in southeast London and started rapping when she was sixteen years old. She has had a varied career as a poet, playwright, rapper, and recording artist. She has released a spoken-word album; a multimedia project Everything Speaks in its Own Way; and a recording album, Balance, with her band Sound of Rum. Her solo record, Everybody Down -- a concept album featuring characters who will return in her debut novel, The Bricks That Build the Houses (Bloomsbury, Winter 16) -- is shortlisted for the 2014 Mercury Prize. She is a two-time winner of the poetry slam at the Nu Yorican Poetry Cafe, and has received poetry commissions from the Royal Shakespeare Company and the BBC. Her narrative poem Brand New Ancients, conceived as a performance piece, won the Ted Hughes Award in 2012, and will be published alongside Hold Your Own, her first collection. In 2014, Tempest was selected as one of this decade's 20 Next Generation Poets from the UK and Ireland.

An indictment of the MFA mentality.

I don't know many contemporary British poets, and I don't like the vast majority of American ones. The tyranny of MFA mentality in both poetry and playwriting is like the metastasis of McMansions across the physical landscape. This book, and Kate Tempest generally, is an indictment of that mentality. She and this book are brilliant. She writes with utter ease and individuality. She is that rare thing-- herself. She has Shakespeare and Blake in her, and a discerning ear will hear it. This book and Brand New Ancients have given me hope for the future of poetry among the young.

This book.

I've recommended this book to every person I know and a few people I really don't know that well. I want them to get it, to be touched by it like I was. I don't want it to fall into the hands of someone who won't appreciate it. The myth of Tyresius becomes a look at all of humanity and society as a whole. The words are approachable, bitter, but so so well timed, so satisfying to read. Please, just read it. Stick with it. It will stick with you.

An easy-to-read treasure for history buffs

Despite my initial misgivings about this book (which I thought was going to be too pro-Cuban), I found it to be a very valuable piece of history.

It is basically an open letter written by C. Wright Mills paraphrasing what Cuban revolutionaries in 1959 (including Fidel Castro) told him during interviews he conducted on the island.

It's written in a fresh and informal style, using the "we" (Cubans) and the "you" (Yankees) and giving it an honest and intimate feel. It's not what I expected and it was a very easy yet informative read.

And it raises important questions, like where did the Cuban revolution go wrong and is the USA's aggressive opposition to it part of its failure or are the Cubans trying to cover their mistakes by blaming a country which they say they have no use for (under the imperialistic circumstances that have always existed between the two)?

All in all, the Cuban voices here seem to be very sincere and extremely hopeful (the revolution had just triumphed and was gaining momentum). Perhaps too hopeful. More than once, they're downright naive but, of course, that's hindsight. There was really very little indication that things would go awry shortly thereafter. The only annoying thing about these Cuban voices is how they refer to Castro as "our Fidel" in the same sentence where they swear they abhor the cult of the individual.

A little treasure for those who lean towards sympathy were the Cuban revolution is concerned (knowing, of course, that it was the great white hope which turned into a big red mistake). Definitely something every US citizen should read.

Analyzing the logic and practices of mass media industries and hip-hop culture, this book outlines how 21st century Venus Hottentots (female rappers and hip-hop video performers) are the complex construct of hip-hop culture's adaptation of marketplace logic wherein "booty" is capital. Many record labels and male recording artists, like the 19th century European colonizing explorers, are mining Black females' bodies in the name of profit. Most popular female rappers and video performers, like the Khosian woman from South Africa, are "willingly" acting as commodities. In this book, I argue that acknowledging the historical weight of the Venus Hottentot image is NOT an unwarranted imposition of some original image's aura onto all expressions of Black female sexuality. Indeed, its historical weight has persisted for centuries and festers underneath mainstream cultural discourses about Black women. This book reviews young Black women's hope and beauty. Love this book

Love this book, but many may not, keep in mind it was written in 1860, and a persons writings were indicative of their place in society, so it is a bit flowery and colorful, the writer goes to great pain to describe things. Today, we could communicate his one page in a paragraph. Just the way writing was back then. One would say to themselves today, c'mon get to the point, man. That being said, it is very detailed, as Langstroth is comsidered the Godfather of all things bee related.

Good book, but not much use to a beginner beekeeper.

This book is a great book if you are looking to learn about the history of beekeeping since it was written in the 1800's. I do not recommend the book for thge beginning beekeeper since so much in this book is difficult to understand, but if you are a reasonably experienced beekeeper who is used to the terminology it can be interesting. It is a difficult read, but with due diligence much can be learned from it. I gave this book four stars only because of the difficulty in wading through some mighty esoteric stuff.
