This Fiddler Plays A Most Beautiful Tune

Ever since I saw the movie "Fiddler on the Roof," I wanted to read the short stories upon which the movie was based. I finally took the plunge, and I'm glad. Probably as interesting as the short stories themselves were the thoughts of the translator and how he worked to maintain the integrity of Aleichem's stories. He mentions that the stories are very different from the musical (and movie), but I could pull out passages that were used word-for-word in the musical. I really think the two go hand-in-hand.
Tevye the Dairyman and The Railroad Stories would be an excellent book to precede a study about the Holocaust. It gives the flavor of Russian Jews living in the Pale Settlement, and the translator's notes explain quite about about the antisemitism of Russia. Students would be able to see the Jews through the eyes of one, poor dairyman and his struggles to deal with life, love, and living according to Jewish law. The translator's notes bumped this book from four stars to five, for me. (less)

Read and Discover the ORIGINAL "Fiddler on the Roof"!

My students, 25 adults and senior adults who read and discuss Jewish stories for pleaure, loved this collection of stories! Sholem Aleichem is the greatest writer of Yidddish stories. This new translation by Hillel Halkin brought all of theTevye (one of Aleichem's greatest creations) stories together in one place. We read and discussed the stories in two six week classes; one on Tevye and one on the Railroad Stories. Having them together gave us opportunity to not only explore the skill of the writer, but also see if these stories still worked for today's audience. Since we are an interfaith group with hardly anyone able to read in the original Yiddish, we could also see if Sholem Aleichem brought his readers into the story, what ever their backgrounds. Aleichem's wonderful descriptions also painted the scenes and the evironment and brought them to life. If you are not familiar with "Fiddler on the Roof" (based on the Teveye stories here) or even if you are, read and discover the "orignal" (through translation) in the outstanding collection!!

The Tevye stories are much better, even, than the musical.

The Tevye stories take up about half this collection, and were, for me, a delight. While the musical gives a hint of Tevye's willingness to accuse God of injustice, it really comes through in the written version. The translator in his introduction, sees Tevye and Job has being willing to accuse God for the unfair world they find themselves in, all the while remaining devout believers. So, if you've bogged down trying to read Job, read Tevye instead.

Not that this is a dreary theological treatise. The original Yiddish writing has a reputation for being quite funny and clever, and I think the translator has performed a minor miracle in being able to make the humor and irony come through in English.

Wait? Why is this series so popular?! I have to sensor and correct almost every sentence! If you want you want your child to call babies "dumb", friends "stupid", and treat other people horribly, this is your book. Junie is a rude, mean, and conniving little girl. The last chapter we read, she tricked one of her friends into giving her her brand new shoes right off her feet and the other friend a gold locket from her grandma. We don't want bullies in our house. Out you go Junie B!

easy enough to read in a few days without her ...

My daughter who's 8 enjoys reading these books. There's probably about 8 chapters per book so they're not too long, easy enough to read in a few days without her wanting to put the book down. The only thing I don't like is STUPID is used numerous times throughout the books. I'm not a big fan of that word, other than that decent books for 7 or 8 year olds.

Love this is exactly what I needed to get my daughter interested in reading. My daughter started reading early but seemed to lose interest until we read our first Junie B Jones book. the first book was so fun to read I definitely recommend this series!

Very readable and enjoyable... Hope hospitals "get it" before I need one as a patient!

I "read" the audio version... very well done. Well written, just the right mix of theory and stories, and for the audio version, the reader was excellent.

And I find this book hopeful... as a physician with 30+ years in medicine, I have a grave fear of the time when I become a ward of the medical-industrial complex. In general, it is not patient-centric, nor in some cases, imbued with much common sense. This is a sad reality. This book won't fix all that ails us, but the ideas presented, and the spirit contained therein, are a great start.

A decent reading of an important book (for Hospital Executives)

This book is getting a little long in the tooth now...but if you're a hospital exec looking to get a better handle on your customer satisfaction / net promotor scores, it is essential in my opinion. It's a great reminder of the "early days" of customer sat in healthcare, and really sets the groundwork for things like Value Based Purchasing.

The book is a good read, easy and fast. It is written in a conversational tone and gives great, specific examples. It can be ACTED UPON quickly. I enjoy reading it.

However, I'm now finding that it's easier for me to "read" business books via audiobook. Great way to spend my time in the car. The conversational tone of this book really lends itself to the audio format. The narrator is the author, Fred Lee. He's good at conveying the meaning of his book and overall is good. Occasionally, he trips over words and his voice is not exactly "radio star" quality. And the music that leads in and out of each chapter is AWFUL. But these are minor complaints compared to the value I get from having these discs.

The audience for this product is tiny...but if you're in that audience, you NEED this (either CDs, book or both). It's time well-spent helping to refocus on what TRULY makes your customers (patients) loyal and satisfied.

Thought provoking, but leaves readers in the "how trap" the closing pages warn of

This is a great book for anyone in a service industry to read. It's thought provoking and clearly organized with a number of illustrative examples and stories. The writing is by no means literary, but it is not poorly written. It has real substance which sets it apart from many similar books. Although the vignette in each chapter are helpful, at times they are verbose and so numerous as to obscure the central teaching of any given chapter. The book would be better if the "human interest stories" were cut back significantly.

The substance/rules/"things" are really tools for thinking about the problems you face when running a hospital and striving for service excellence, rather than implementable solutions to those problems. This is both the book's greatest strength and greatest weakness. The author closes by cautioning readers not to fall into the "great ideas but how do I implement them" trap. This is sophomoric. Although no reasonable reader will expect tailor made solutions, trimming the gratuitous congratulatory mentions of various nurse managers and spending more time on the details underlying their success would have been helpful.

Bottom Line: Good use of money and time, would recommend.

good resource

I've been using this line of workbooks for my kids for a couple of years now. I like that the workbooks each focus on a different skill, and the lessons aren't carbon copies of each other. The reading passages come in many different formats, from stories to letters to advertisements and even some comic strips.

My daughter has some learning difficulties in reading and this book, with her tutor helping her , has helped her come along way. She has attention span issues so the works in this book were short enough and engaging enough for her to get practice in summarizing

About the Author
Jack Vance is one of the greats of science fiction. He has been writing for more than 60 years, and in 1997 was honored as a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America. He is the author of dozens of science fiction and fantasy novels, including the World Fantasy Award winning Lyonnesse series, and the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning "The Last Castle," He lives in Oakland, California.


Kevin T. Collins is an actor, singer, and recording artist with a BFA from NYU s Tisch School of the Arts. He has performed in numerous theater performances, including "Angels", "City of Angels", "Paradise Lost", and on television in "Law & Order: Criminal Intent", "As the World Turns", and "The Guiding Light."

A Charming Changeling

Madouc, the third book in Vance's Lyonesse Trilogy, is probably the best. The first two books, Suldrun's Garden and The Green Pearl, are wonderful, but the title character, Madouc, and her search for her pedigree, are among the most charming characters and quests in fantasy. She steals the show.
Casimir, the relentlessly scheming king of Lyonesse, has learned the child he thought was his grandaughter, Madouc, is in fact a fairy changeling. That is somehow wrapped up in the mystery of Dhrun, son of King Ailias of Troicenet, of whom it was prophecied by a magic mirror that he would be the king of all the Elder Isles. Not if Casimir can help it. He wants that throne for himself.
And there are much larger, darker schemes afoot, as the evil magician Tamurello and the mysterious witch Desmei plot against Murgen, the Elder Isle's greatest wizard, who alone keeps the Elder Isles from sinking into the sea.
And into this web of political and magical intrigue wanders Madouc, determined to learn her pedigree, possessed of a bit of her fairy mother's magic and a truly wonderful charm all her own. It is Madouc who sets this novel apart from other fantasies. Vance does a splendid job creating a central figure who will beguile and amaze you.
Vance blends myths from half a dozen cultures into a seamless whole. The Elder Isles are saved, if at a terrible cost. The kingship is resolved, after a terrible war. And Madouc even learns her pedigree. The book is full of surprises, and sly references to other legends. As just one example, you will learn how the Holy Grail got to where Sir Gallahad could find it...
You should read the whole Trilogy. If for some reason you cannot, read Madouc. It's a wonderful conclusion to a wonderful trilogy.

Vance is a star.

Jack Vance is one of the best. His books are real page turners and have inspired the imaginations of generations of readers. It's no fluke that Vance has inspired much of the content found in the world's most popular role playing game system.

I cannot recommend Vance highly enough. If you have a kid, give her or him a book by Jack Vance.

Fantasy-lovers, take heed! Madouc is third in one of the greatest fantasy trilogies ever written. You will fall in love with the fairy changeling/royal princess whose search for her heritage takes you on a merry chase. Read all three of the Lyonesse books by Jack Vance-you won't regret it. A note: Madouc won the award for Grand Fantasy in the year 1990.
