OK collection of very similar stories

This wasn't really what I was expecting, though I can't say the description was wrong. Well-written in general (barring a typo or two), this collection features very sloooow muscle growth, more centered around people working out a lot than using magic or technology. The stories end up feeling really similar, and there isn't really any variety. If you like the first story in the book, you'll like them all - but if like me you thought it was kind of "meh", then that's how you'll feel about all the others. I was hoping for more magical or unexplained transformations, or at least some healthy variety in story types, but not here, I'm afraid. It was decent for what it was, but it wasn't particularly great.

Physics of the Human Body comprehensively addresses the physical and engineering aspects of human physiology by using and building on first-year college physics and mathematics. Topics include the mechanics of the static body and the body in motion, the materials properties of the body, muscles in the body, the energetics of body metabolism, fluid flow in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, the acoustics of sound waves in speaking and hearing, vision and the optics of the eye, the electrical properties of the body, and the basic engineering principles of feedback and control in regulating all aspects of function. The goal of this text is to understand physical issues concerning the human body, in part by developing and then using simple and subsequently more refined models of the macrophysics of the human body. Many chapters include a brief review of the necessary physical principles. There are problems at the end of each chapter; solutions to selected problems are also provided. This text is geared to undergraduates interested in physics, medical applications of physics, quantitative physiology, medicine, and biomedical engineering.

 

About the Author

Irving P. Herman is Professor of Applied Physics in the Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics at Columbia University in New York, NY. He received B.S. and Ph.D degrees in physics from MIT, where he was a Fannie and John Hertz Predoctoral Research Fellow. He then joined the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which he left in 1986 to join Columbia University. His main research areas have evolved from using lasers for separating deuterium and tritium isotopes, to following and inducing thin-film reactions, and, more recently, to analyzing nanomaterials, and also investigates the guided assembly of nanomaterials. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the Optical Society of America, held the Lady Davis Fellowship Visiting Professorship at Hebrew University, and was the Seidman Family Series Lecturer at the Technion. He was chair of his department for six years and director of the National Science Foundation MRSEC Center for Nanostructured Materials at Columbia for 12 years. He has also authored the monograph Optical Diagnostics for Thin Film Processing and over 150 papers in peer reviewed journals, and has three patents.

Mixed bag depending on purpose

First, the good. Herman covers a wide range of topics. His text is relatively easy to follow and once you work through his math footwork he has gathered a grab bag of useful insights into the physics of the human body. Since that seems to be the purpose of the book I'd say mission accomplished.

However, this book really isn't suitable for all audiences. Herman clearly assumes his audience has a strong to very strong background in physics and math (at least a solid grasp of differential equations, which he summarizes in Appendix C) but an elementary grasp of biology. I would have preferred a more balanced approach with more explanation of the physics being employed along side a higher level discussion of his choices on why biological models have been simplified the way they have.

Overall, this mix makes the book a good choice for an advanced physics course with heavy prerequisites but a poor choice for someone with a biology background trying to expand his or her knowledge of how biophysics approaches the body.

At last!

Finally, a bioengineering textbook that I can require in my undergraduate courses with a clear conscience. This is the best text I have found for introductory biomechanics, and has content that supports courses in physiology and systems analysis as well. It has numerous quantitative questions/problems with appropriate content and difficulty for undergraduates. It lays a foundation in sophomore-level statics (e.g. free body diagrams with sigma(F)=0) so BioE students can acquire some of the same problem-solving strategies as their ME/AA counterparts. On the other hand, there is no classical truss analysis (method of joints/sections), that being replaced with biomechanical examples that teach some musculoskeletal anatomy as a side benefit. Most illustrations are black-and-white, well suited for 2-D vector analysis, but the infrequent gray-scale photographic illustrations leave much room for improvement.

Physics of the human body is a weighty book of quasi 900 pages that explores the complex relationships between physic laws and anatomical apparatus of the human body. Substantially this book is not difficult to understand but more than some chapter requires the knowlewdge of a mathematical approach of a superior order derivates, integrals etc.). Once I started, there was no way I could put it down. One of my favorite HEA's ever =)

DEMON!!!!! I am going on record as saying Demon's HEA is up there at the top of my favorites.

Demon has been a mystery throughout the Hades Squad books. I fell instantly in love with Demon at the beginning of the series, scarred, grouchy but you can tell under all that gruffness is a golden heart.

Demon Seed takes place shortly after Devil and Jess's wedding (DEVIANT DEVIL bk 3). Demon heads off on a mission by himself and ends up finding much more than he bargined for. Jacinta has turned his world and plans upside down since the moment he saved her from an almost gang rape. Jacinta is a refreshing, funny, lovable heroine. She is innocent, brave, and a master at mixing up idioms. I just adore her. I smiled every time she would say to Demon "I should like to say...." and he just melted and cringed at the same time every time she said it, melted because it was cute, cringed because he knew those words meant she was up to something. For being such an innocent she kept him on his toes and aroused constantly. Like the rest of the Hades Squad, Demon is a mega alpha, he wants to protect Jacinta from everything and like the Hades Squad's women, Jacinta is independent and determined to take care of herself. The conversations and bond that forms between the two is heartwarming, funny and sweet. I love their HEA "from my heart's bottom."

There are MANY twists and turns in DEMON SEED. I never saw the reasons and players behind everything going on coming. Because there are so many twists and turns I am not going to delve into the storyline, for fear of inadvertently spoiling something.

And THANKS to you Jianne Carlo, my ereader is sitting here, once again, with smoke coming out of it. I barely saved it from spontaneous combustion while reading the all the smokin' hot smexin.

Jacinta and Demon are going to stick with me forever, something about the bond they share is timeless and has stolen a piece of my heart. I might even have to admit I have my first ever girl crush on Jacinta, she is just too damn adorable...shhhhh...don't tell Demon, unless you think he might like it ;-)

I should like to say I can't wait for the last of the Hades Squad, Satan, to get his story.

What a half-assed conversation to be having in the middle of the ocean with a woman he’d just rescued from certain gang rape, being shot, and who knew what else. A curvy, luscious female whose virginity he’d just taken in front of four armed men. Talk about the best laid plans backfiring; Demon’s carefully plotted plan to capture the man who abused him, Pedro Nunez aka The Smiling Killer, was not off to a good start.

“What’s your name?”

“Jacinta Nunez.”

Jacinta claims to have lived her whole life in a cloistered convent. Claims she’s an orphan. Claims she’s only lived in the outside world for fifty-seven days. Yet she’s the mirror image of Pedro’s sister, Rosa. The sister Pedro murdered fifty-seven days ago.

My Review:
I loved Demon Seed the next book in the Hades Squad series. From the very beginning Ms. Carlo throws her characters into the frying pan and their adventures continue throughout the book. It's a never ending roller coaster ride full of emotions and never ending twists and turns.

Demon is on a personal mission to seek revenge on an evil man from his past, Pedro.
Encountering a small group of armed men with two women outside the cave where Demon has stashed a lot of equipment is quite the surprise. The smaller of the two women has a familiar look, but Demon is too distracted trying to save his butt and the women from the armed men.

Demon is really a good guy and he tries to hide it with his rough exterior and bad boy activities. So when this petite woman shows that she can turn his stomach into knots, he's very surprised.

Jacinta da Silva is ready to take her final vows at the convent that she's lived in for as long as she can remember. Instead, she's told she needs to go out and live in the world, experience life. Jacinta is surprised but leaves the convent anyway. She also has a mission, to find her parents!

The book is very well written, the characters are full of emotions, dimension, and seem so real. The air between Demon and Jacinta seems to sizzle with excitement and tension during their entire journey. There is so much action and adventure inthis story, I never knew what was coming next, never a dull moment. Their relationship is constantly growing and getting better and better all through the book.

Pedro is the most vile, diabolical, despicable man around. The things he's done over the years are terrible. He's the villain a reader loves to hate and Ms. Carlo has written him perfectly.

And finally, Ms. Carlo reveals how Demon got his name. I can't wait to see who tames team leader, Satan, I'm sure it will be very delicious. I would strongly recommend all the books in the Hades Squad series and I hope you'll love them as much as I did.

Demon- Book 4 of the Hades Squad

Demon is book 4 in The Hades Squad Series by Jianne Carlo. This book is a stand alone book or can be read in order. I personally think that the other books have to be read in order, but this book takes place on location, verses with the rest of the Hades Squad. We do get to see some of our favorites, but not till the very end of the book.
This story is Demon's story. While he finds his lady love and has a similar story of where he falls hard and fast and wants to make this young girl his, its different because there is such mystery as well as a suspenseful story of trying to remain safe and hidden. Which of course doesn't happen because that would be a boring book. However the leading lady is strong and can more then take care of herself, I just wish she didn't have to face such difficulties in her young life. But because of all she's been through and all she faces in this book, show more than deserves to find a man who will love and protect her.
I loved this book because you have a strong alpha man who is ex-SEAL, and while he gets into many tight situations, its actually Jacinta who is only 20 years old, a virgin and lived her life at a cloister convent who shows how strength and determination can perceiver.
The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars, is because I missed the dynamics of having the whole crew together. Having it just be Demon and Jacinta kind of felt like a dimension of the story was missing.

About the Author
Steven Galovich is Professor of Mathematics at Lake Forest College. Dr. Galovich's specializations are algebraic number theory and algebra, and his interests include the nature of mathematics, Fermat's Last Theorem, and the history of mathematics. In 1988, he won the Carl B. Allendoerfer Award for expository writing presented by the Mathematical Association of America for the paper "Products of sines and cosines" published in Mathematics Magazine.

A treasure

This is an outstanding book that teaches mathematics from the ground up, starting with elementary logic and working its way up gradually through the techniques and notation needed to formulate and rigorously prove theorems. Along the way, it touches on the fundamentals of set theory, number theory, calculus, analysis and linear algebra. There are no prerequisites, making the book suitable for everyone from precocious high schoolers to graduate students.

I had the pleasure of using the earlier edition of this book ("Introduction to Mathematical Structures," 1989) for the logic and proofs course required of math majors at Carleton College. After this edition came out, I became the grader for the course. I found the problems in the book to be very well-crafted, challenging yet approachable for the students. Nearly all of them felt both necessary and sufficient.

The book is much-improved in its second edition, with a generous number of examples and exercises. I would recommend it to anyone pursuing or even contemplating a degree in mathematics, science or philosophy.

Not a suitable introductory text

I am astonished by the other reviews. Obviously these reviewers are far more proficient in mathematics than I. However, I feel that I am on strong ground when I disagree with the notion that this book would make a good introductory text for undergraduates or high school students. Many parts of the text are not clear. Often the author's explanation of defnitions (which are usually easy to understand) create confusion. Further, I do not think starting out with truth tables is particularly appropriate. Better that the author set the context for valid and invalid arguments, then implications, then the details of the truth tables. Chapter 4 on Set Theory is generally horrible, particularly the subject of Relations. (The reader would be better served by relying on the classics such as Halmos.) I found that Wikipedia is much more illuminating and clearer than Galovich. In general, using Galovich drove me to rely on Wikipedia, Mathworld, etc more than any other math text.

In conclusion, I think the author tried to cover too many subjects in 300 pages. Also I think the layout and organization of the book needs some work.
