In this revision of his 1986 book, he describes the "E-Myth," which basically states that a person with technical but few management skills can do well in business. Gerber describes developing a precise business system that produces consistent results because it has been tested and refined. He says that businesses thrive because of innovation, quantification, and orchestration. Visualize what is true success to you as a person, Gerber advises, and work from the ideal to the specific. While the author is a consumate salesman who reads his material in soothing tones, he offers too many abstract ideas and too few concrete plans. There is little useful content here. Not recommended.

Gerber doesn't have any real business experience, so why read this book?

Gerber is just perpetuating the myth that you can start a business and have other people run it for you so you can go retire on an island. It is bogus. Very few businesses succeed in the long term that rely on a operations manual to guide the company with little input from the entrepreneur.

If Gerber's system is so effective, why do most highly successful entrepreneurs still spend so much time with the companies that they created?

Why do you want to hire employees with no skill and pay them as little as possible? All that method does is promote high turnover and HR nightmare associated with that.

Why does Gerber think that this model can be applied to highly skilled and technical areas of business?

It is baffling that there are so many good reviews for this book. I can only imagine that they are from people that haven't yet started their own business and are excited by the false hopes that this book sells.

Shivers & More Questions

Great entry-level book to business. I had a lot of 'wow' moments where I got the shivers thinking about the implications of what the author talks about in regards to how franchises are so successful, the games they implement to 'motivate' their employees and the systems used to maintain quality and brand regardless of the type of employees one hires. The book is repetitive but in a way that isn't annoying. It spirals on each point until you have it drilled in.

I agree with a lot of the points made. But note the belief of the author is that a business is to eventually be sold. Now that I have a better understanding of the importance of a plan, systems to implement, an organizational chart, im trying to answer my next question--how can I grow a business to a level that I can maintain while still being involved in the 'lower-level' work (The author stresses that one shouldn't get caught doing technical work for too long)

I would recommend this to anyone. If you're trying to become the world's best guitar maker then this probably isn't all applicable. This book + a guide to becoming the best guitar maker and running the biz would be ideal.

This book transcends time and culture

This book and it's principles will profoundly impact your journey as an entrepreneur.

My business, an organic food technology start up company, has a lot of moving parts and it's complex
on many levels. I decided early on to incorporate these principles. Im glad that I did. Especially, the part
where he talks about the hotel and how every single task and how to do it is defined and measured. This is tedious,
but you cannot scale, and you cannot adequately measure a person's performance unless every single aspect of
exactly what they do is defined step by step.

I once heard a growing company does not provide jobs, it provides opportunity. Unfortunately, many people are looking for a job,
when you take away the mystery of how long it takes to get something done, and the technique necessary to do it right... there is
nothing for a a lazy, unmotivated employee to hide behind.

Get the book if you haven't. It isn't a best seller because of hype.

Printing may be distracting, but still the perfect Bible if you want to study deeper

I was a little leery of purchasing this Bible, given all the negative reviews about the printing quality. However, the Thompson Chain Reference Bible is one that I have wanted for several years. I first got one about 10 years ago, and due to the very light red text and inconsistent printing, it was returned. I have finally repurchased, and as I still notice these issues, I think it is just the way that it is with this publisher.

As for the quality of the printing, there are definite issues that are noticeable. I have attached a picture showing how the darkness of the print can vary between pages. It is not that extreme, but noticeable and possibly distracting. The red font is also a light shade of red which is not that easy on the eyes, compared to my older Bible where the red was a darker color. Another issue I noticed with the red font is that some of it is actually slightly out of alignment with the regular font. The more issues like this that I find, the more it seems to distract me from reading, as I start scanning the pages for problems. I have not found anything so bad it makes the text illegible, just a bit distracting.

On the positive side, this is the perfect Bible if you are like me and looking for a Bible that goes beyond the basic text, but includes aids to help you get more out of the Bible (and you don't want commentary, which might be wrong or biased). You can really study with this Bible and get more out of it. And even though it has a tremendous amount of study aids, the actual body of text is COMPLETELY free from any notes or annotations, leaving you free to just read the text if that is all you want. The beginning of each book usually has a short notation of the author and often things like the main theme, key thoughts, and key verse/text of the book; there is also a subheading under each chapter division that gives a quick list of the topics in that chapter. And of course, it has a unique and comprehensive chain reference system that makes it easy to study further along basically ANY topic encountered while you read. Another reviewer mentioned this, but if you look it up on Youtube, you can find a video that makes it much more clear how it works.

The back of this Bible also has an enormous amount of other study helps. You could spend a lifetime using this Bible and still not glean everything out of it. It includes:
-- Text cyclopedia. Here, all the topics from the chain reference system are found, and the full list of cross-references is given. Also groupings of topics that are very similar so you can study along a similar topic.
-- Bible readings (groupings of topics and verses for devotions or speaking)
-- Outlines of each book of the Bible. Includes a brief history of the different Bible versions, outline of the Bible as a whole, historical outline that relates Biblical times to secular history, and outline of every book. Some books also have illustrations to further help in understanding the overall idea of the book. Great if you are like me and need to see the bigger picture in order to understand the details.
-- Character studies. Includes some charts and graphics. Also includes differences in how Christ is portrayed between the gospels, and list of prophecies of Christ and their fulfillment.
-- Harmony of the gospels and illustrated studies. Includes maps with annotations actually explaining where things happened (great if you don't like flipping back and forth between the map and text, trying to understand what happened where). Also several more illustrations of various topics. Good if you are a visual learner who needs charts or pictures to understand things.
-- Archaeological supplement with pictures
--Glossary of archaeic words in the KJV with modern meanings
--Concordance
--Color maps with index
-- and more (list of memory verses from each book, guides to Bible study and marking, Hebrew calendar explanation, etc)

Because this is such a unique and helpful Bible that so many people could benefit from, I do wish the publisher took a bit more pride in their product to simply make the printing uniform and easy to read. All the hard work behind the content is there -- I just don't understand why the printing cannot be made uniform. Because a Bible is not an everyday purchase, I think most people including myself would be willing to pay extra to ensure quality. I would probably be willing to pay double for this Bible if the quality were stellar. Despite the printing issues that bring this Bible down from being the best it could be, I still love this Bible because I think it is one of the few that provides the tools to not just read, but really study deeply.

Good Meat and Potatoes Bible

This is a review of the Thompson Chain Reference Bible (Style 509black) - Regular Size KJV - Bonded Leather.

The quality is excellent. The Bible is very sturdy and smythe sewn. The pages are thin but need to be as it would be simply to heavy with thicker paper; it has 1,923 pages not including the great maps (15 color) which include a very helpful index. I've experienced no problems reading the text on account of the thin paper and I have bifocals. The red lettering could be darker and brighter but I'm still satisfied with it.

The Bible has a copious Archaeological Supplement with each article having its own chain reference number that is linked to from the Bible text itself when appropriate, it also contains many B&W photos (about one per page).

It also has a ca. 100 page concordance which not only directs you to verses in Scripture but also to chain reference numbers to further help with the topic you are studying and of course these have many more Scripture verses to assist you.

I would recommend Bible Tabs for this Bible or the indexed version since you'll be doing a lot of verse search for obvious reasons. Also a set of tabs that have blanks where you make your own references for the index, maps etc. wouldn't be a bad idea. If you can afford it I would also recommend a smythe sewn version so you'll have a Bible that will last and will lay out on your table or desk very conveniently.

On the devotional side I've found the Chain Reference Bible very helpfull when I am going through "dry spells", and just don't feel like spiritual reading and who doesn't experience that? The reason being is that it has so much information contained in it, Archaeological Suppliment, Outline Studies etc. (600 pages worth) that you can start there and let these helps serve as "frosting" for your your Bible Study and they can lead you into the Bible text itself, the "cake" so to speak. For all the extras in this Bible it still, as of yet, does not seem to me to be a fancy or "high tech" (i.e. a lot of opinion) version which suits me just fine so I've labelled this review "Good Meat and Potatoes Bible".

Amazing quality!

I had read other reviews stating some problems with this particular printing/publisher, but have not observed any of these problems in the Bible I received.

1. Although I was expecting actual leather (I read leather bound) it is bonded leather. However now that I read again I see that is what is described and the binding is still beautiful.

2. There were complaints about the clarity of the print color and sheerness of the pages. I find that the print color and clarity is exceptional and although the pages are somewhat translucent so as to see other words through the page it is not distractingly so. The pages are very thin and it would be wise to be careful but I appreciate the thin-ness of the pages as closer to the traditional Bibles I remember from my childhood. Also, although the print is somewhat small, it is not so small that I cannot read it. The print is definitely larger and easier to read than the last Bible I had.

3. All in all I am very thrilled with this purchase! I have been contemplating for many months now purchasing a standard sized Thompson Chain Reference Bible. I have been wanting to get one of these because I like the idea of all the study helps and studying the Word out yourself without resorting to commentaries which are one mans opinion.

Most structured oscillator book I've found

The're several excellent other oscillator

books I've in my collection but this one is

the most structured and gives full insight

into existing and novel ring and LC

oscillators circuits. Some times it could

be somewhat more to the point, and the

discussed phase noise simulation method

is limited to quasi-linear oscillators, but

on the other hand the new theory on I/Q

oscillators is very insighful.

I did have a good knowledge obout both LC oscillators and ring oscillators, this book does not give anything new or interesting about oacillators design, it is a collection of results of papers and comments on them.
i was disappointed in the contents of it.

Very good, but you need other sources if unfamiliar with Vietnamese cooking

I spent a month traveling around Vietnam eating some of the most delicious food that I have ever had. I have a great appreciation for Vietnamese food and I would say that it is my 3rd favorite cuisine, so I wanted to learn how to cook it. I did take 2 cooking classes while in Vietnam but you don't get to actually cook the whole dish. I am also really good at cooking authentic Chinese food (Sichuan). I would say that I am a novice at cooking Vietnamese food with some knowledge of what is authentic Vietnamese food. I bought this book here that I am reviewing plus I got a couple of others from the library. There are some pros and cons to this book compared to the ones I got from the library (Vietnamese Home Cooking and Pleasures of the Vietnamese Table.)

The positive aspects of this book include the explanations of why you would use one ingredient over another or why Vietnamese do one thing over one. I appreciated the guidance on what fish sauce to buy. There were a lot of other great tips such as what do when you just have store bought chicken stock. The dishes listed include many of the ones that I tried throughout Vietnam especially in the North and South. They did not include many of the dishes that I tried in the central part, though. I was only there a month so I did not try everything. There was a wide variety of dishes and I appreciated that the Vietnamese name was included unlike the Vietnamese Home Cooking book because I am more familiar with the Vietnaemese name and not the English name. Basically this is a treasure trove of amazing facts, information, and dishes. I am glad I bought it for these reasons.

The negative is that there are not enough pictures for me, a novice who is not very familiar with all of the dishes. For example, if you want to make the steamed buns with pork, there are no pictures showing you the steps in making them like in Vietnamese Home Cooking. I need Charles Pham's book if I really want to make this dish. Also, some of her dishes are overly complicated such as Chicken Pho and include steps that I cannot do because of my burner. So I had to read other books and go online to find alternative ways to cook the food. Also, with Banh Xeo (Vietnamese Crepes), she says to make the flour by hand and not use store bought rice flour, which is really overly complicated. I learned how to make this dish in my cooking class using store bought rice flour. Other cook books and videos online say use store bought rice flour. Using her book requires you to do some research online and to possibly have a second and third book to help you. The recipes in all 3 books are not the same. For instance, the ingredients for papaya salad in all 3 books are very different..

I have cooked 2 recipes from the book so far: papaya salad and chicken pho. I messed up on the papaya salad . Part of the problem with the dish was my fault (I did not eat papaya salad in Vietnam, but ate other salads), but I think the recipes from other books would have given a more flavorful dish with a lot more texture (carrots, mint, and fried shallots). The chicken pho turned out well, but i had done a lot of research before cooking it and had to use an alternative cooking method for the onions and ginger. I watched tons of videos, so I was well prepared (unlike the papaya salad). I think her instructions were confusing especially about making the broth, but I am also not familiar enough with making broth or stock. Anyways, the broth was very flavorful and complex. I loved the herbs. Finding necks and backs was difficult and I didn't find any. I used chicken wings.instead and the neck from the whole chicken. I think the flavor was similar to what I ate in Vietnam.

I like this book and I prefer it to the other ones from the library, but I still need those other 2 to help me cook.

Great introduction to Vietnamese cooking, could use more photos

If you have any interest in Vietnamese cooking and live in a western country, this is the book to get. One of the difficulties with Vietnamese cooking is that a lot of the ingredients are only purchasable in Asian markets, and even then, there are differences in the quality of the ingredients. This book goes over names, both in English and Vietnamese, herbs and substitutions that might be more readily available, and the qualities and brands of ingredients to get (e.g. there is an entire section on fish sauce alone).

I've only made about five recipes so far, but all of them have been very authentic and delicious. The recipes cover all the main aspects of Vietnamese cooking, including sandwiches, soups, salads, desserts, meats, and more. Note that there are criticisms that note this book's recipes have modified or simplified Vietnamese cooking in an unfavorable way. I find that true to a certain extent, but I think it works better with modern sensibilities towards cooking, especially in the west. A lot of purists will find problems with her recipes, but for a novice, it is a fantastic place to start.

There are two things that keep me from giving this a perfect score. The first is that there are surprisingly very few photos, which is odd for a modern cookbook. The second is that the selection of soups is surprisingly limited which I consider to be a staple in Vietnamese cuisine.

I still highly recommend this book as there is not another quite like it available in the west.

Peter and Heather Larson do premarital coaching, speaking events, and marriage education together in a variety of settings. Peter is a licensed clinical psychologist and co-developed the customized version of the widely used PREPARE/ENRICH couples assessment tool. Heather is the founder of Bridgewell Coaching. Married for nearly 20 years, the Larsons have three school-aged children and live in Edina, Minnesota.

She's Almost a Teenager

Peter and Heather Larson and David and Claudia Arp have teamed up to write a guide for parents of pre-teen young ladies.The purpose of She's Almost a Teenager is to provide conversation starters for parents as a means to discuss important issues with their soon to be teenage daughters.

For example, Chapter One includes some great questions that help parents to zero in on what issues they should focus on with their daughters. They advise parents to ask themselves what difference a particular situation will make in the light of eternity. The book goes on to cover topics like friends, academics, body image, faith, boys, money, etc. In each chapter, the authors ask parents to think about what they believe and why about these topics, attempting to help them focus on long-term goals (viewing every situation in light of eternity).

Though the book does a nice job of pointing parents to some great conversation starters, the authors begin with the premise that every daughter WILL BE a problem in her teen years. In addition, the authors use a lot of secular sources for support, with very little biblical support. As a homeschool mom, many of the assumptions the authors make don't apply because my kids aren't in public school and won't face the same types of situations. Obviously, parents with children in public (or even private) schools will be able to better relate to the authors' perspectives.

Also problematic for me is the lack of credibility the authors have on this particular topic. Despite the prodigious education of Peter Larson and the group experience in Christian circles, neither couples actually have experience with teenage daughters. The Larsons have one son who is 14 and two daughters who are 11 and 12. The Arps have three adult sons, but no daughters. Personally, I would prefer to take advice from parents who have successfully navigated the teen years with their daughters and who can show that their daughters are walking with the Lord as adults.

Overall, if you're looking for a way to start conversations about important issues with your daughters, this book might be a helpful starting place for you. If you are looking for deep biblical insight, this isn't the book for you.

Perfect Guide for Parents.

She’s Almost a Teenager is different from what I initially expected it to be about. I thought of how it would cover parenting method for my almost teen daughter. I must say that it is refreshing to read a book that guides you instead of what to tell your daughter. The book is broken down into eight chapters, each chapter is about the different topics you may cover with your daughter.

The book is written for parents who wants to learn how to connect with their daughter, how to reach out and start a conversation, instead of the typical “good” “yes” and “no” answer, but to actually get a meaningful and thoughtful answer. It also allows you to learn about her view on school, friends, and the future. The main idea behind the book is to begin a conversation with your daughter not lecture.

The openness of the questions at the end of each chapter (which you may or may not use during your conversation) creates a friendly environment allowing your child to open up and share their thoughts and ideas. It also provides you with a chance to connect with your daughter and share your thoughts and ideas. This is different from you just telling them how things are and what you expect, because your daughter is able to reciprocate which allows her to feel that her thoughts, ideas, and opinions is valued. Isn’t that what we all wished we could have had with our parents?

The coming teenage years is going to be a fun roller coaster of change physically, emotionally, and mentally. I think we can all use the tools we can get our hands on now to be able to take on this change with confidence and together.

In the introduction, each author introduced themselves and of their experiences. It helps to know the authors are currently parenting tweens/teens and have experienced teen years already. To me this speaks volume and I hold their guidance with higher value against someone who may not have the background experience.

The book not only focuses on how to talk, listen, and connect with your daughter, it also looks at long term goals. It’s hard to imagine, but this is the age we should start these conversations, it gives not only your daughter an idea of what it would be like, it also gives you a chance to glimpse at what it may look like in their view. The book also touch base on the message we send our daughter, what is perceived to be important versus what is really important? How can we show support without placing emphasis on unrealistic expectation? My daughter struggles with certain subject, but excels in another, am I able to let it go and encourage her to do her best without making her feel she’s not doing enough?

The final section of the book the author presented us with two ideas to use: Project Thirteen and Birthday Boxes. I didn’t have Project Thirteen or Birthday Boxes growing up, so this was something new. After reading the ideas, I must say, I am very interested in doing them. It’s such a great way to bring in the teenage years, and a way to encourage your teen that you believe in them and assist them in becoming an adult.

Great book for parents of tween girls!

She’s Almost A Teenager is an intriguing book that implores parents to be intentional and proactive in discussing the upcoming minefield of issues in their daughter’s teen years when they are tweens. The book is divided into chapters that covers many different areas: academics, faith, boys, money, tech, and friends. The book also includes some bonus material for projects that focuses on goal-setting and organization around adding responsibilities and rights as your child gets older. Peppered throughout the book are boxes called “Arp Adage” which help to focus the reader on tips and ideas on applying the book. Finally, each chapter ends with a list of questions to be used as conversation starters with your tween which summarize the chapter. I like that the questions are in one place for quick reference.

I enjoyed this book. I’ll point out that while it is written for the parents of a tween girl, some of the discussions and advice would do well for tween boys with some adaption. The authors used an excellent analogy for the teen years in which they compared it to be like belaying a rock climb. The parent needs to slowly let out more “rope” to allow the child to have new experiences, more responsibility, and rights. However, the parent should always be there to catch them if they start to fall. Even if a fall isn’t imminent, the parent can be there to give advice on what the next move should be. The book also does a good job of showing that the change from tween to teen isn’t something that simply occurs on the child’s thirteen birthday. Instead, this transition should be looked at as a period of ever-increasing incremental responsibility and maturity. I also like that the authors focus on making plans for all facets of the child’s life: spiritually, academically, relationally, physically, and financially. I highly recommend this book to the any parent of a tween girl.
