Brooke's Compendium on Creative Therapies for Eating D/Os Is As Diverse & Multi-Disciplinary as Eating Disorders Field Itself
By Pavel Somov, Ph.D., author of "Lotus Effect," "Present Perfect," & "Eating the Moment"
"Creative Therapies for Eating Disorders" is - categorically - a must-read and must-buy resource for clinicians working with eating disorders. This compendium of creative therapy modalities for working with the eating disordered population is chock full of invaluable perspectives. Here are just a few of them...
Psychodrama and Dramatherapy - as clinical modalities - make perfect sense: eating disordered clients evidence the cognitive-behavioral-affective inflexibility that is classic for the compulsive-obsessive spectrum of clinical presentations. Psychodrama and Dramatherapy allow eating disordered clients cultivate spontaneity, set precedents of conscious choice, override inflexible reactive schemas, and - in total - cultivate greater response flexibility.
Cosmin Gheorghe's chapter on Existential Psychodrama offers a particularly astute and phenomenologically intuitive reframing of obsessive and compulsive eating behavior routines (be they of self-restricting vector or of the overeating/binge-eating vector) as self-soothing/ritualistic behavior designed to diffuse existential anxiety/angst. This perspective offers a nice conceptual antidote to the still common misunderstanding of eating disorder behavior as self-handicapping, self-punishment or self-destruction.
Shinta Hermann's evolutionary-sociological-anthropological perspective offers an intriguing reconceptualization of self-esteem as a "resource holding power" that anorexics fight for and bulimics surrender (you'd need to read the chapter to get into the specifics of this intriguing perspective).
Amy Jerslid's chapter on creative use of spirituality for eating disordered population offers a highly practical series of value-neutral inquiries into how client's definitions of perfection, forgiveness, guilt interface with their spiritual values, thus, offering a tactful catalyst to spiritual-cognitive-value dissonance that may leverage clients' potent spiritual resources to reconcile conflicts b/w the psychology of disordered eating and their spirituality in favor of healthier eating.
Julia Andersen's chapter on the body outline drawing technique offers an excellent creative therapy analogue to verbal reality testing.
Sheila Rubin introduces an excellent integration of dramatherapy and DBT, and offers a wealth - truly a wealth! - of practical exercises and suggestions.
Brooke's sourcebook on creative therapies for eating disorders goes on and on and on: from sandtray to music therapy to art therapy to dramatherapy to play therapy to the coverage of culturally-attuned art therapy for eating disorders to supervision of eating disorder clinicians to the discussion of the population-specific process tips. This is a well compiled ontology of what the contemporary creative therapies have to offer to one of the most complex clinical presentations. The book - in offering such a revealing close-up on the work of art/music/drama therapists - brings the field of creative therapy to the foreground and reminds the psychological and psychiatric providers of the frequently under-utilized and untapped referral resources at hand.
